A CASE STUDY OF:

FOOT-OVER
BRIDGE NEAR JAWAHAL
LAL NEHRU STADIUM,
NEW DELHI
PRESENTED BY:

NAVYA CHUGH
CHANTHANA SUBAIR
2ND YEAR (A)

The suspended steel-arch-type FoBs are the first-of-its-kind of

structures built in the country. The bridge, to be used by athletes
during the event, connects the main Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to a
nearby parking lot.
However, there was a slip in one of the clips that
supported the structure which was attached to the end
of the suspenders dangling

from an arch. The structure

COLLPASED FOOTOVER BRIDGE

The bridges were rebuilt using alternate

suspender system of Freyssinet Suspenders
which are manufactured using specific
industrial processes including heat treatment
(quench and tempered) that ensures
increased mechanical characteristics.

consists of a two-stage
heat-treatment process.

Stage 1 includes
hardening, in which the
plate is austenitized to
approximately 900C and
then quickly cooled. The
material is water-quenched

The PWD appointed P&R group to construct two

steel suspended arch bridges weighing 600
metric tonnes and built-up SAW welded steel
box sections.
SAW welding, i.e, submerged arc welding
NOTE:
1t=1000kg

Submerged-arc welding (SAW)

involves the formation of an arc
between a continuously fed
electrode and the workpiece. A
blanket of powdered flux, which
generates a protective gas shield and
a slag, protects the weld zone. A
shielding gas is not required. The arc
is submerged beneath the flux
blanket and is not normally visible
during welding.
