Compare and contrast valley glaciers

Glaciers

Compare and contrast valley glaciers

Ice Sheets

Valley Glaciers

Enormous ice masses that

flow in all directions from
one or more centers and cover
all but the highest land
Sometimes called continental
ice sheets because they huge
areas where the climate is
extremely cold
Cover Antarctica and
Greenland today

Ice mass that slowly

advance down valleys once
occupied by streams
Can be long or short, wide
or narrow, single or with
branching tributaries
Are found in high
mountains world wide

Both Originate on land where more

snow falls in the winter than melts in
the summer. This snow compresses
into coarse grains of ice called glacial
ice that is pulled by gravity and erodes
the landscape.

Good Essay Response

Valley glaciers and ice sheets are both types of
glaciers. This means they form in areas where there is
more snowfall in the winter than can melt each
summer. This snow accumulates and turns to glacial ice
that moves downhill and erodes the land beneath it.
Valley glaciers are smaller and are found worldwide.
They flow down mountains where streams normally
flow. Ice sheets on the other hand are very large and
often cover whole continents and very cold climates.
Currently, ice sheets cover Antarctica and Greenland.
