Ghana operates on a 6-3-3-4 system
Primary School 6 years
Junior Secondary 3 years

English is official language of instruction

The first three years students study any of eleven local
languages
After which English becomes the medium
Textbooks and materials are in English

Nine or ten subjects
Admission to Senior High School is competitive
70,000 students can be admitted into the 500
secondary schools
Each school graduate 300-700 students annually

Private high schools:
International and Faith Montessori (A-level curriculum)
SOS-Herman Gmeiner International College, Tema
International, & Lincoln Community (IB curriculum)
Ghana Christian International (WASSCE and A-levels)
These institutions together graduate a total of 200
students each year

Senior High School (SHS)


The public schools:
Take a Core curriculum : English Language,

Integrated Science, Mathematics, & Social Studies


Each student also takes three or four Elective subjects
The Elective subjects categories:
Sciences, Arts, Vocational, Technical, Business, or
Agriculture
The grading system: 80 -100% = A

Candidates takes WASSCE
Exams are given nationwide in May-June each year
Results available in October
Admission requirement to the university - credits (A1
- C6 in WASSCE and A D in SSSCE)
Total aggregate not exceeding 24
