SIMPLE PRESENT
TENSE

Function
To express habits, general truths, repeated actions or unchanging
situations, emotions and wishes.
To give instructions or direction.
To express fixed arrangementa.
To express future times after some conjunctions.

Forms
Affirmative form : S + V1 + O
Negative Forms : S + do/does + not + V1 + O
Interrogative Forms : do/does + S + V1 + O

Always done on a certain time, example : every week, every Monday,
etc.
Always done certain times in a certain time, example : once in a
week, twice a day, etc.

Examples
(+) She eats rice everyday.
( - ) She doesnt eat rice everyday.
( ? ) Does she eat rice everyday?

SIMPLE PAST
TENSE

Function
Used to talk about a completed action in a time before now.
Used with a duration which starts and stops in the past.
Used to describe a habit which stopped in the past.
Used to describe past facts or generalizations which are no longer
true.

Forms
For Verbal
Affirmative form: S + V2 + O
Negative form: S + did + not + V2 + O
Interrogative form: Did + S + V1 + O
For Nominal
Affirmative form: S + was/were + Adj/Adv/Noun
Negative form: S + was/were + not + Adj/Adv/Noun
Interrogative form: Was/were + S + Adj/Adv/Noun

Time Signal
Yesterday.
The day before yesterday.
A few minutes ago.
An hour ago.
Few days ago.
A few years ago.
Last Christmas.
Last Eid Fitr.
Last night.
Last week.
This morning.
Exact time in the past, example: in 1969, in 2001, in 2004.
Exact time in the point of view of the subject, example: when I was 4 years old, when I was 17.
Inexact time in the point of view of the subject, example: when I was young, when I was a teenager, when I was
a kid.

Examples
For Verbs
Affirmative form: I ate pizza yesterday.
Negative form: I didnt ate pizza yesterday.
Interrogative form: Did you eat pizza yesterday?
For Nominal
Affirmative form: He was a sailorman when he was young.
Negative form: He wasnt a sailorman when he was young.
Interrogative form: Was he a sailorman when he was young?

PRESENT
PERFECT TENSE

Function
To describe an action or situation that started in the past and
continues in the present.
To describe an action performed during a period that has not yet
finished.
To describe a repeated action in an unspecified period between the
past and now.
To describe an action that was completed in the very recent past,
expressed by 'just'.

Forms
Affirmative form: S + has/have + V3 + O
Negative form: S + has/have + not + V3 + O
Interrogative form: Has/have + S + V3 + O

Time Signal

Ever
Time that happened in the past and continuing in the present, example: for
years, for ten years, for fifteen years, for days.
Unfinished/Still ongoing time period, example: today, this week, this year.
Unspecified time period between the past and now, example: Recently, Lately,
Frequently, Several times.

Examples
Affirmative form: Theyve lived in Madura for years
Negative form: They havent lived in Madura for years
Interrogative form: Have they lived in Madura ?
