Pitch Two

Team Blue Mage

Storms are powerful.

Brains are powerful.
But if brains could
make storms from
their imagination, they
would bring
Armageddon!

In this 2D Top-down
Adventure Shoot-em-up,
players will control the
power of storms and use
their storm effects to
explore the environment
while fending off a variety
of elementally attuned
enemies.

Goals
Because we want to
emphasize the
adventure aspect,
despite gameplay
being Shmup style,
players goals will be
more exploratory in
nature than in most
games of that genre.
Interacting with the
environment will be
key to uncovering
secret areas and
advancing through the
game.

Antagonists
Not only will there be
a variety of AI
controlled enemies,
portions of the
environment will be
dangerous as well.
These environmental
hazards will often be
made harmless by
solving simple puzzles
with storm abilities.

Theme
To complement the
logical elemental
puzzles, a fantasy
steampunk aesthetic
will help tie the
mechanical thinking to
the intense and
exaggerated action.

Thematic
Elements
The player will control
storm-like abilities that
align with different kinds
of storms. These abilities
will allow them to
interact with similarly
themed environments as
well as harm enemies in
different ways.

Rules
Storms will play to
elemental weaknesses
when in combat but
will be more in line
with their storm type
when exploring. For
example, a watery
enemy may be weak
to lightning, but
lightning will short
circuit electronics in
the environment, with
little effect on
environmental pools
of water.

Dynamics
Because there will be
differences between
combat and
exploration, players
will need to examine
the effects of their
storms on enemy and
environment alike,
always testing for new
interactions.

Novelty
Elemental puzzles
have been played to
death, but in a shooter
environment, puzzles
are an extreme rarity.
By introducing simple
and intuitive puzzles
to the shooter
environment, we can
encourage players to
experiment while
maintaining a skill
based challenge
environment.

Similar Titles
While this game
shares the most
similarity to Kings
Knight due to its more
adventure-like
aspects, it is similar to
many other top-down
shooters as well.
However, its puzzle
aspect sets it far apart
from most other
games in the genre.

Risks
Shooters require
tricky AI in order
to retain player
attention and
create difficulty. AI
can be a time
consuming
development for
many teams and
may limit
productivity.

A large variety of art

will be necessary
to create the
variety of
environments and
enemies as well as
storm effects. Our
team has a
weakness in the
art department so
this presents a
risk specifically to
us.

Player expectations
when jumping into
a Shoot em up
game may hinder
our plans for
environmental
puzzles. Tunnel
vision may prove
too powerful for
players to enjoy
the more novel
portion of this
game.
