AREA AND PERIMETER

THE CONCEPT OF AREA

AND PERIMETER
Perimeter
The perimeter of apolygonis the
distance around the outside of the
polygon.
A polygon is 2-dimensional;
however, perimeter is 1-dimensional
and is measured in linear units.
The yard is 2-dimensional: it has a
length and a width.
The amount of fence needed to
enclose the backyard (perimeter) is
1-dimensional.
The perimeter of this yard is the
distance around the outside of the
yard, indicated by the red arrow;

Area
The area of apolygonis the
number of square units inside
the polygon.
To understand the difference
betweenperimeterand area,
think of perimeter as the
length of fence needed to
enclose the yard, whereas area
is the spaceinsidethe yard.
Perimeter is 1-dimensional and
is measured in linear units
Area is 2-dimensional: it has a
length and a width.

PERIMETER OF COMMON
SQUARE

The perimeter of an object is the sum of the

length of all of the sides. For example, the
perimeter of a square would be the sum of the
four sides of the square.
If a square is four cm on each side, we can add up the
four sides to determine the perimeter of the square:
4 cm + 4 cm+ 4 cm+ 4 cm= 16 cm
We also can multiply one side with 4. it is
because every sides has the same length
4 cm x 4 = 16 cm
To find the perimeter of common square , we would
use the following equation:
p = 2l + 2w

UNIT OF AREA AND PERIMETER

VOLUME

DEFINITION

Volume is defined as the amount of

space taken up by a three-dimensional
object.
Volume of liquid is defined as the
amount of space taken up by a liquid,
which spreads completely to fill its
container.

What is solid?

A solid is a sample of matter that

retains its shape and density when not
confined.
The volume of solid is the amount of
space it occupies.

What is fluids?

A fluid is anything that would spill or

float away if it weren't in a container.
Fluids or free flowing materials also
occupy space.

Differences between
solid and fluid
Solid

Fluid

Have shape.

Takes the shape of the

container which the fluids
occupies.

A single state of matter.

A group of states; liquid, gas,

vapour and plasma

SOLIDS

Volume of solids can be found by 2

different methods.
1. Displacement
2. Computation

Displacement

The simplest method of finding the

volume of an irregular solid. For
example, a rock placed into a container
of water will cause the water to rise.
The volume of the displaced water is
equal to volume of the rock

Computation

The dimension of a solid can be used to

determine its volume. For example ;

A block of wood with dimensions of 10

cm, 10 cm, and 10cm has a volume that
can be found by using L x W x H.

That is, it has a volume 10 x 10 x 10

which equal to 1000 cubic centimetres
(cm3 )
The formal unit for measuring the
volume of solids is the cubic centimetre
(cm3 )

FLUIDS

It occupy space.
Volume of fluids can be measured by
placing fluid into a graduated
container.

Awareness of capacity of
containers

It is important that children have the

opportunity to handle a variety of
containers which maybea) Similar in shape but varied in capacity
b) Identical in capacity but varied in shape
c) Of regular and irregular shapes

Direct comparison

Fill one container and uses this as

measurer
By pouring the contents of one
container into another is able to
discover whether container have the
same capacity.
Vocabulary

Informal unit

Use of common unit which are filled

and countered for comparison.
Example: Sets of cup that have same size and shape

Formal unit
Litres
Almost every liquid that we buy in the

supermarket is measured in litres (L). Items

such as milk, fruit juice, soft drink and even
engine oil for the car, are all sold in litres.

Millilitres
The millilitre (mL) is used to measure

smaller quantities of liquid. There are 1000

mL in 1 litre. A small bottle of orange juice
may contain 375 mL.

several devices used for

measuring volume :

measuring spoons - tablespoon,

teaspoon, 1/2 teaspoon, 1/4 teaspoon
measuring cups
graduated cylinders
beakers

When measuring a small liquid volume,

such as a dosage of cough syrup, the best
unit to use is milliliters. A slightly larger
volume, like the amount of flour or sugar
needed to make a cake, would be measured
using cups. A liquid volume of this size,
such as heavy cream used in baking, would
be measured using pints.
The volume of a large amount, for example
soda in a bottle or milk in a carton, can be
measured using liters or quarts.
A very large liquid volume, such as an
aquarium, would most likely be measured
using gallons.
