CAPITALIZATION

RULES

RULE #1.

1. Capitalize the first letter of the first


word in a sentence.
EXAMPLE:
We walked along the path to the
take.

RULE #2.
2. Capitalize the pronoun I.
Example:

Should I call you later?

RULE #3.
3. Capitalize the first letter of the first
worn in most lines of poetry.
Example:
Roses are red,
Violet are blue,
Sugar is sweet,
And I am too!

RULE #4.
4. Capitalize the first word, the last
word, and all important words in the
title. Do not capitalize a, an, the, and,
but, or, nor, or prepositions of the four
of fewer letters unless they are the
first or last word of a little.
Example:
The Little Prince

RULES #5.
5. Capitalize peoples names and their
initial (s)
Examples:
George W. Bush
Cathy Melissa Thurmond
Dr. Richard Smith
T. J Duckett

RULES #6.
6. Capitalize days, months, holidays,
and special days.
Examples:
Tuesday
July
Arbor Day
Christmas Eve

RULES #7.
7. Capitalize Mother, Dad, and others
titles if you can insert the persons
name.
Examples:
Has Dad gone to the store?
We all know that Uncle Duance tells
crazy stories.

But dont capitalize when


names or titles are used
like:
* My dad has gone to the
store.
* Our uncle tells crazy
stories.

8. Capitalize names of organizations.
Example:
Boy Scouts of America

9. Capitalize the names of institutions.
Example:
Boston College

Capitalize business names.
Examples:
Delta Airlines

structures.
Example:
Washington Tunnel

12. Capitalize the names of specific
geographic places
Example:
Indian Ocean

13. Capitalize the names of historical
events and historical documents.
Example:
American Revolution

14. Capitalization the names of
languages.
Example:
French

RULE #15.
15. Capitalize the Roman numerals
and the letters of the first major topics
in an outline.
Capitalize only the first word in
an outline unless the words are a
proper noun.
Example:
I. Oceans and seas
A. Major oceans
B. Major seas

RULES #16.
16. Capitalize the first word a
direction quotation. Do not capitalize
the word following the quotation
unless it is a proper noun.
Example:
Harvey asked, How old are you?

17. Capitalize brand names but not
the products.
Example:
Ford Van

18. Capitalize regions, religious
documents, names of churches and
names for a supreme being.
Example:
Christian(religion)

RULE #19.
19. Capitalize a proper adjective
but not noun it modifies.
Example:
A California beach

RULE #20.
20. Capitalize the first world of a
greeting and closing of a letter.
Example:
My dearest friend
Sincerely yours
