STEM

A career in STEM is for you if you like challenges that

require you to use Science, Technology, Engineering,
and/or Mathematics to solve problems.

STEM is . . .
STEM is an acronym used for
Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics
education. We focus on these
areas together, not only
because the skills and
knowledge in each discipline are
essential for student success,
but also because these fields
are deeply intertwined in the
real world and in how students
learn best. STEM is an
interdisciplinary and applied
approach that is coupled with
hands-on, problem-based
learning.

What is a Career Pathway?

According to Hull (2004), a pathway
is defined as a coherent,
articulated sequence of rigorous
academic and career/technical
courses, commencing in the ninth
grade and leading to an associate
degree, baccalaureate degree and
beyond, an industry recognized
certificate, and/or licensure.

STEM Pathways are broken

up into eight (8) pathways
1. Advanced Manufacturing*
2. Aerospace
3. Biotechnology
4. Energy
5. Geospatial Technology
6. Information Technology**
7. Nanotechnology
8. Robotics
*This is also part of the manufacturing career cluster.
**This is also its own separate career cluster.
These are examples of how many clusters can overlap and support each other.

The Advanced Manufacturing

Pathway
In this pathway you will use a variety of
activities that depend on the use and
coordination of information, automation,
computation, software, sensing, and
networking, and/or making use of cutting edge
materials and emerging capabilities enabled
by the physical and biological sciences; for
example nanotechnology, chemistry, and
biology. This involves both new ways to
manufacture existing products, and especially
the manufacture of new products emerging
from new advanced technologies.

organisms or other biological systems
to manufacture drugs or other
products needed for environmental
management. For example waste
recycling where you use
microorganisms to degrade the waste
or oil spill.

The Energy Pathway

In this pathway you will use the many
different forms of energy to power other
industries. There are many forms of
energy: light, heat, mechanical,
gravitational, electrical, sound,
chemical, nuclear, and so on. Often
these different forms of energy can
transfer back and forth from one
another.
