relations and promote cooperation
among employees.

oderliness or the absence of
disorder, chaos and and
confusion in human behaviour
and action.it occurs when
employees behave in an oderly
and responsible manner.

Definition
According to Richard D. Calhoon
,"discipline may be considered
as the force that promotes
individuals or groups to observe
rule,regulations ,standards and
procedures deemed necessary
for an organization."

Objectives
1. To gain willing acceptance of rules, regulations,
standards and procedures of the organization
from
the employees .
2. To develop the feeling of cooperation among
the workers.
3. To maintain good industrial relations in the
organisation.
4. To promote morale and efficiency among the
workers.
5. To develop a sense of tolerance and respect for
human dignity.

TYPES OF DISCIPLINE

Discipline
2*Negative
Discipline
3*Progressive
Discipline

1.Positive discipline:It implies a sense of

duty to observe the rules and regulations .It
is also known as self -discipline .
* It involves the creation of an atmosphere
in the organization whereby employees
willingly conform to the established rules
and regulations.
* It can be achieved by awards and effective
leadership.
* It reduces the need for personal
supervision required to maintain standards.

2.Negative Discipline : It is also

known as punitive or corrective
discipline.
* Under it penalties or punishment are
used
to force workers
to obey rules and
Major penalties
Minor penalties
1.Withholding increments
1.Oral warning
regulations
.
2.Written reprimand

2.Devotion/stoping promotion

3.Loss of privileges

3.Discharge

4. Fines

4.Dismissal

5. Suspension

3. Progressive Discipline: It tries

reprimands to the severity and frequency
of
the employee's infractions. Penalties for
misbehaviour vary according to how
significant it is and how often it occurs.
For example: the ultimate penalty of
"discharge" would be reserved for the
most severe behaviour (any felony
crime).

Causes of INDiscipline
*Inefficient leadership .
*Faulty supervision.
*Divide and rule policy of management .
*Unfair management practices.
*Uninteresting work.
* Low wages and poor working conditions.
*Drunkness and family problem.
*Political and trade union influences.

ESSENTIALS OF A GOOD
DISCIPLINARY SYSTEM
1.Knowledge of
rules.
2.Promote action.
3.Fair action.
4. Well defined
procedure.
5. Construction
approach.
6. Review and
Revision.

1. Knowledge of Rules: Both the

supervisor and the worker should
clearly understand the rules and
regulations of the organization. For
this purpose , the organization should
develop a code of discipline in
cooperation with the workers.
2. Promote Action:All violations and
misconducts should be promptly
enquired into. Punishment should not
be delayed otherwise it will lose effect.

3.Fair Action: All acts of indiscipline

should be punished consistently and
uniformly. There should be fair treatment to
all without any bias. Punishment should be
decided after enquiry and the workers
should be given the opportunity to explain
his action.
4.Well -defined Procedure:The procedure
to be used for disciplinary action should be
clearly laid down.Definite and precise
provisions for appeal and review of all
disciplinary actions should be provided for.

5 .Constructive Approach; The

discilpinary system should be as far as
possible preventive rather than
punitive. Focus should be on
preventing violations rather than on
administering penalties.
6.Review and revision; All the rules
and regulations should be appraised
at regular intervals to ensure that they
are appropriate to the changing times.
