Plant Biomass Production and Valorisation (5 ECTS

Bio and Chemical Processes (5 ECTS)
Biomass pretreatment and thermal treatment (5 EC
Chemicals and Fuels from Biomass (10 ECTS)
English (5 ECTS)
Bibliographic review (5 ECTS)
Lab Research (25 ECTS)

To obtain the Master Bioref you need to have these 60 ECTS

Bioref 1 : Plant Biomass Production and

Valorisation (5 ECTS)
In charge: Prof. Simon Hawkins
Objectives :
- Present the different kinds of land and marine plants
that can be used in a biorefinery.
- Describe the opportunities and difficulties of working
with biological material
- Describe the contribution of plant biomass in a
bioeconomy
- Present the different types of biorefinery and land
products

Bioref 2 : Bio and Chemical Processes (5 ECTS)

In charge: Dr. Benjamin Katryniok
Objectives :
- Identify the function of a catalytic reactor difference
between ideal and real reactor
- Model the function of a heterogeneous catalytic reactor
- Optimize a heterogeneous catalytic reactor for a given
objective

Bioref 3 : Biomass pretreatment and thermal

treatment (5 ECTS)
In charge: Dr. Mirella VIRGINIE
Objectives :
- Explore the feasibility of thermal pretreatment of
biomass
- Obtain a knowledge of the large diversity of biomass
sizes, shapes, compositions, and other parameters
- Identify the effect of each pretreatment on the
cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin
- Obtain a knowledge of the chain of biomass valorization

Bioref 4 : Chemicals and Fuels from Biomass (10

ECTS)
In charge: Prof. Franck Dumeignil
Objectives :

- Develop skills in catalysts synthesis (chemical

complexes of transition metals, supported, colloids,...), in
catalytic reaction for biomass transformation through
homogeneous, heterogeneous and enzymatic catalysis.

Bioref 5 : English (5 ECTS)

In charge: Prof. Frdric Damageux
Objectives :
- Academic English : How to differenciate between spoken English and formal English, and
use the appropriate terms and expressions in a formal essay/letter/thesis
- Presentation English : how to give good, clear and concise PP Prsentation. How to prepare
it, express yourself clearly, address your audience, react to question, etc
- CVs and covering letters : how to write a modern, clear, attractive CV well adapted to
your goals. How to write a covering letter that will stand out and emphasise your qualities
in good, accurate English
- Lab English : How to describe lab experiments (including materials, equipment, set up,
conclusions) with audio exercices providing examples in international context
- Part of the course is also specifically aimed at students who need to improve their
proficiency, with vocabulary and grammar exercices, audio and video documents and
interaction

Bioref 6 : Transferable skills - Bibliographic review

(5 ECTS)

In charge: Dr Mickael CAPRON

Objectives :
- Risks Analysis
- Gather scientific bibliographic data from different
sources for a specific topic
- Sum up these bibliographic data collected in a
manuscript
- Make an oral presentation of this topic

Bioref 7 : Lab Research (25 ECTS)

In charge: Dr Mickael CAPRON
Objectives :
- Be able to manage a clear research topic and provide a
structured report of the work, evidencing results,
problems, potential solutions,
Important : The lab research is minimum 17 weeks
long, it could be more, Its a good idea to start to look
for it right now. It can start in February 2017.

Evaluation
The evaluation will be done after each parts (1 or 2 two weeks after the end
of each parts)
and you will be aware about the date checking the google agenda.
It will be written tests except for English (Bioref 5), bibliography review
(Bioref 6) and lab Research (Bioref 7). For these module , youll have to
propose a manuscript and defend it through an oral presentation.
The average mark (10/20) should be obtained for each module.

Useful Informations
- Schedule : youll have access to google agenda in which you have all
information (course, professor name, room, ) check it dayly
- Provide to the secretary your main email address and scan of a picture (of
you)
- At the end, dont forget to claim to your owner the date of your departure at
least one month before, if not youll have to pay extra fees.
- In order to enter to the ENSCL (C7 Building) you need to activate your
multiservice card. For that you have to met, M. Patrick Duplouy :
1st floor of Bt. C7A, door 930, between 7h-12h AM and 1h15-4h PM, Except
