What is the importance of

Electrical knowledge for a
Civil Engineer?
(Advantage and Benifits)

3 Basic factors on why it is necessary for civil

Engineers to study basic Electrical Engineering

1. Electrical Safety
2. Electrical Technology is Everywhere
3. CE and EE are dependent on each other

BASIC ELECTRICITY

BASIC ELECTRICITY
What is Electricity?
Electricity is a form of energy generated by friction,
Induction or chemical change, having Magnetic, Chemical
and radiant effect. In short, ~Electricity is Electrons in
motion

BASIC ELECTRICITY
Electricity is a property of the basic particles of matter
Which like an atom, consists of:
a) Electron - negative charge of electricity
b) Proton - positively Charged
c) Neutron - is not electrically charged

BASIC ELECTRICITY
AMPSis amount of electricity.

VOLTSis the Push, or the Force

OHMSslows the flow.
WATTSis how much gets done.

COMPONENTS IN
BUILDINGS

BASIC ELECTRICAL
COMPONENTS IN BUILDINGS
1. ELECTRICAL METER (METRO)
is a device that measures the
amount of electric energy
consumed by a residence, a
business, or an electrically
powered device.
Calibrated in billing units,
kilowatt hour [kWh].

2. TRANSFORMER
A transformer is an electrical
device that takes electricity of
one voltage and changes it
into another voltage.
Increasing or decreasing the
voltage and current levels of
their supply, without modifying
the amount of electrical power
being transferred.

3. SWITCH GEAR
Switchgear is the combination of
electrical disconnect switches,
fuses or circuit breakers used
to control, protect and isolate
electrical equipment.
Switchgear is used both to deenergize equipment to allow
work to be done and to clear
faults downstream.

4. Bus/Feeder
Is a heavy gauge conductor
that is capable of carrying high
amperage current throughout
a building safely and efficiently.
The bus or feeder is tapped as
needed and a conductor is run to
an electric closet, which serves
a zone or floor of a building.

5. Branch Panel
Electrical panels divide power
coming from the electrical
Service Entrance into various
circuits, providing a fuse or
circuit breaker for each circuit
and usually having a main
switch.
