INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND

RECENTLY, although the Riam Kanan (Ir. P.M. Noor) DAM structure still in well
performances there were some worried about the probability of the Riam Kanan DAM
will Collapse

Riam Kanan Dam or Ir. P.M. Noor DAM which is located in Kabupaten Banjar Region
Kalimantan Selatan Province was built during 1970s (funded by JICA and constructed
by Japanese) and completed in 1972. Nowadays, the DAM has reach 40 years old,

the DAM volume capacity reduced by the cause of sedimentation process and finally
getting more vulnerable since it built from earth fill homogen structure making it
more possible to failure.

Beside that the possibility to the DAM Breach or overtop on DAM levee can cause
catastrophic damage and more dead toll on the Major city, Martapura and
Banjarmasin on the middle and Lower stream area because the two cities lays right
on the riverbanks.

Based on this situation the study is needed to analysed the all technical aspect of
DAM Break Simulation Model based on GIS Raster Grid Modeling in order to create the
better Mitigation and Emergency Action Plan if the worst case scenario occur.

METHODOLOGY

The Dam-Break simulation model based on GIS Raster Grid Modeling study focuses on DAM break
processes itself,

calculation analysis on reservoir outflow hydrograph,

beside that also focuses on the numerical modeling of floods (downstream routing) caused by the
DAM break, with an emphasis on rapidly unsteady varying catastrophic floods (such as flash
floods, floods due to dam-break or levee breach, etc.) and the related bed level changes.

Special numerical techniques are developed for these types of floods, which often involve
discontinuities (hydraulic jump, traveling positive wave) and mixed flow regimes over complex
terrain topography.

The most important technical aspect about this problem is How long the shockwave come into
(tc extreme flood) and how far it will going to take the significance impact on its Riverbanks and
land area

BENEFIT AND GOALS

The study on Dam-Break Simulation Model Based on GIS Raster Grid Modeling has the Benefits and
goals:

1.

Develop and refine state-of-the-art numerical methodologies and models for predicting flood
inundation due to catastrophic floods (dam-break, levee-breach, flash flood, etc.), the
accompanying sediment transport process, and the impact of such floods on environment and
ecological system.

2.

Use these models to assist government agencies and private institutions in conducting flood risk
assessment studies, planning and designing flood control project, and establishing early warning
system and emergency action plans helped by real time data transmission network

3.

Modeling of dam breach and levee breach processes. The research is being carried out to include
algorithms for gradual (CONTINUES FLOW ANALYSISIS) and partial destruction scenarios(EXTREME
VALUES) based on available semi-empiric methods, and the calculation here along included the
consideration in computation of the erosion process based on sediment transport calculations

4.

Modeling of dam-break flow on movable bed. Dam-break or levee-breach type fast floods are
accompanied by intensive sediment transport and rapid changes in the bed elevation. Modeling of
non equilibrium sediment transport and the related bed level variation accompanying such rapidly
varying unsteady flows is a highly challenging research area. The time scale of bed-level changes
approaches hydrodynamic time scales.
