Background of the thesis

In digital control system, interference, which is mixed in
the input signal, has a great influence on the performance
of the system. Therefore, processing of input signal has to
be done to get useful signal.
By using frequency sampling method, FIR filter design has
been processed by MATLAB. In the view of the designed
program of MATLAB, we can get the amplitude-frequency
characterization. By using the FIR digital filters which
have been designed to process the input signal based on
the MATLAB function, the filtering effect of different
digital filters has been analyzed.

Filter
A filter is an electrical network that alters the amplitude
and/or phase characteristics of a signal with respect to
frequency.
Filters are often used in electronic systems to emphasize
signals in certain frequency ranges and reject signals in
other frequency ranges.
Filters may be classified as either digital or analog.

Advantages of digital filter

Programmable
Can be easily designed, tested and implemented
Extremely stable with respect to both time and temperature
Can handle low frequency signals accurately
More versatile
Relatively simple and compact
According to the impulse response, digital filters are usually of
two types:
1. Finite impulse response (FIR) filters
2. Infinite impulse response (IIR) filters
9/22/16

Advantages of FIR filter

Less number of calculation
More economical
Linear phase response
Non-recursive structure
Small finite precision arithmetic error
Fast Fourier Transformation can be used

Frequency sampling method

We start in the frequency domain and sample the desired
frequency response to get the unit impulse response by
using Inverse Discrete Fourier Transform(IDFT). The
inverse DFT yields an impulse response which leads to a
filter.
The advantage of this method is that we can design
filters directly in the frequency domain.

Conclusion and future work

Conclusion
In this thesis MATLAB and Simulink has been used to represent
the frequencies for FIR filter and observe the amplitude-frequency
characteristics. The goal of this thesis was to design low pass and
high pass FIR filter which attenuate the frequencies of the signal.
For a composite sinusoidal signal, filtering occurred at frequencies
above and below 500Hz due to low pass and high pass FIR digital
filter respectively. Similarly for speech signal, filtering occurred at
desired frequencies in the same manner.
