THE AIM

To teach the students how

TRIGONOMETRY is involved in
measuring height and distance

INTRODUCTION

Some questions will be asked to the

students
Q: How do you measure length of a
book, table or a chair?
Ans: By measuring tape or a ruler
Q: What are these measurements
called?
Ans: Direct measurements

Contd.
Q:Is it possible to measure the height of a flag
post or cliff by direct measurement?
Ans: No
Q:How this difficulty can be made easy and
safe?
Ans: These problems can be solved with the
help of trigonometric techniques
(trigonometric ratios, solving a right
triangle).

At this stage the topic will be

disclosed to the students

DEVELOPMENT
Concept
Applications of trigonometry
DLO
Students will be able to find the
height and distance of objects by
using trigonometry, when three
out of two unknowns are given

TREATMENT AND PROCEDURE

Before starting an exercise, a

daily life example will be given
in order to clear the concept of
students

Daily life example

contd

Lets find the height of this class room

RESULT
Height of the class room = tan X d

If and d are known, height of class

can be calculated

PROCEDURE AND TREATMENT

Example
The angle of elevation of the top of a
flag post from the point on the
ground level 40m away from the flag
post is 60. Find the height of the

post?

Contd

How to solve the

problem?

The angle of elevation of the top of a flag

post from the point on the ground level 40m
away from the flag post is 60. Find the
height of the post?

STEP-1

Proper Understanding of a Statement

What we are going to find?

Height of the flag post
What is given?
Angle of elevation of the top of
the flag post from the ground
The distance between point on
the ground and the flag post

The angle of elevation of the top of a flag

post from the point on the ground level 40m
away from the flag pole is 60. Find the
height of the post?

STEP-2
Making of data

List the known and unknown.

Use symbols to represent the data

Unknown

Height of flag post=h=?

Angle of elevation= =60

Known

Distance between point on

the ground level and flag
post=d=40m

The angle of elevation of the top of a

flag post from the point on the ground level

STEP-3
40m
away from the flag post is 60. Find the
of the post?
height
Conversion
of statement into figure

Flag post
Point on the ground

h
60
C

40m

STEP-4

Solve the ABC for unknown side

Perpendicular
tan=
Base

tan=

AB
BC

h
d

60
C

d=40m

Contd..

tan60
=

40
tan60 x 40
69.28 m

Contd

Result
Hence the height of the
flag post is 69.28m

Contd..

Consider another example.

From the top of a outlook tower ,
the angle of depression of a
building on the ground level is
45. How far is the building from
the foot of the tower, if the height
of the tower is 30m?
