EC602.9

Objectives
On completion of this period, you would be able to
Understand the application of LCD in discrete displays.

EC602.9

We know about liquid crystal display (LCD).

Now we will see the application of LCD in discrete displays.

3)

What is the principle of LCD ?

Compare LED and CCD.
What is the advantage of LCD ?

EC602.9

Introduction
Liquid crystal displays are made by using certain organic
compounds which exhibit the optical properties while
retaining the fluidity of a liquid.
It is a passive type of display.
Liquid crystal cells are light reflectors or transmitters.
Activated by applying voltage between the segment and
the common electrodes.

EC602.9

Introduction
Requires backlighting if they are to be used in the dark
or at night.
Consumes less power.
Used in calculators, digital multi meters, cell phones,
projectors, LCR meters etc.
LCDs using sinusoidal supply switching method or of
segment driving.
LCDs using square wave supply.

LCD display using a Square wave supply

Fig.3
EC602.9

Usually a single LCD is employed for each segment.

Liquid crystal display using a square wave supply is
shown in above figure.
The back plane, which is one terminal common to all
cells, is supplied with a square wave.
Similar square wave is applied to each of other
terminals.

EC602.9

These square waves are either inphase or in antiphase

with the back plane square wave.
Those cells with waveforms inphase with the back plane
wave forms (cells e and f in fig.) have no voltage
developed across them, therefore they are OFF.
The cells with square wave inputs in antiphase with the
back plane input have an AC voltage developed across
them are energized and appear bright.
