Photography

Advertising
Advertising photography is used for brands to sell products
and services to strengthen and support their brand identity.
Even some more simple photographs are carefully thought
out and created. Large business with large budgets usually
work with advertising photographers. Advertising
photographers try to make the product that they are selling
look as best as possible to make the public want to buy it.
This photograph is advertising Coca-Cola, this is a good
example of advertising photography because the picture is
the main selling point of the company. In this picture there is
lighting at the back which is called back lit, they did this so
you can see the colour of the coke through the glass and the
bottle. On the glass and the bottle you can see condensation
which makes the drink look fresh and desirable for yourself
to drink. If you bought a bottle of coke from a shop it would
be in a plastic bottle and the colour would be dark and not
that appealing and would mostly likely be warm and not
cold. Advertising photographers would never photograph the
product how you would find it in the shop because people
wouldnt want to buy it unless it looks appealing to you.

Promotional
Promotional photography is used for publicity towards a
person mainly celebrities. The celebrities can control what
photographs are put out to the public so they can choose
so they come across as a person and a role model. The
images that they give go to newspapers, magazines and
social media.
For example Beyonc only allows her own personal
photographers to take pictures of her especially during her
concerts, she then picks which ones that she will then give
for free to websites, newspapers and television.
Instagram plays a big part in promotional photography
because each celebrity has a verified account for
themselves to control what photos their followers and the
public can see.
Whereas some celebrities dont have that much control of
what pictures are put out and many paparazzi sell pictures
that are taken of them that they havent given permission
for.

Fashion
Fashion photography is used for magazines and clothes to
promote different brands. There is high production values and
creativity put into the photographs taken because they
photographers want them to be high quality.
The photographs taken are used in fashion magazines and used
on billboards. The photographs are taken in studios, on location
or on a runway. They then get produced in a studio.
For example professional photographer David bailey does many
fashion shoots for vogue. These photos are taken on location
then edited before put in Vogue fashion magazine.

Photojournalism
Photojournalism is used to illustrate newspapers,
magazines, websites and television.
Photojournalism consist of news and sport
features. Events that happen in the news can
sometimes be quite devastating or dangerous so
photojournalists would sometimes have to work in
difficult situations under tight deadlines. The
photos that are taken are usually of people who
dont want their picture taken but in the situations
that they are in they cant really give their consent
for the photograph to be taken. Examples of
newspapers and magazines that photojournalists
work for are Magnum, Getty and Action Images.
Famous photojournalists include Roger Fenton,
Don McCullin, Robert Capa and Eve Arnold.
The top photograph was taken of Mo Farrah at the
2016 Rio Olympics after winning two gold medals
of his country Great Britain. This picture relates to
news and sports in photojournalism.
The bottom picture was taken by a photographer
called Nick Ut, he captured nine year old Phan Thi

Portraiture is a type of photography that is

mostly concerned with taking photos of people.
Portrait photographers mainly shoot in a studio
but sometimes they can shoot on location. From
their photographs they aspire to reveal

Documentary
Documentary photography is very similar to photojournalism but
is taken over a long period of time and more thorough and in
depth. Documentary photographers try to reveal information
about the living conditions of working people and their
communities. Their work is more than often sympathetic
towards the subject.
The picture at the top was taken by photographer Lewis Hine of
a young girl working in a factory with huge, dangerous machines
wearing ragged, dirty clothing looking very unhappy. What he is
trying to show from his picture is that children were made to
work from such a young age is horrific working conditions.
The middle picture was photographed by Charles C.Ebbets and
named Lunch atop a Skyscraper. This is a very famous
photograph taken during construction of the RCA building at 30
Rockefeller Centre in New York City. The photo portrays eleven
men eating lunch, seated on a girder with their feet dangling
256 metres above the new York City streets.
The bottom picture is war photography showing a young child
holding a gun, these photographs are documents from a period
of time to show what's happening around the world.

High Street
High Street photographers usually work for individuals or
families. They do wedding photography and family portraits but
also sometimes they will do commercial work for small
businesses like restaurants and estate agencies.

Studio
Studio photography is in a organised location and atmosphere, the
photographer controls the lighting and background to get it exactly
how they want. The result of their photographs are usually very high
quality. Studio photographers use lighting to create a mood and props
to create a more decorative vibe.

Architectural
Architectural photographers try to capture to
beauty of buildings.
If they are taking a photo of a very large
building some photographers take the photo
from a very low angle to show the largeness
of the building.

Medical
Medical photographers take photographs to help
doctors to share their work and to help diagnose
conditions. Their work has to be as clear and as
accurate as possible so the doctors have a clear view
on the persons body.
Medical photographers often use a ring flash so that
there will be no shadows in the picture, if there are
shadows then the doctor looking at the final picture
could get the wrong idea of what they are looking at.,
colour control is very important.

Fine art
Fine art photographers are more
independent, they sell their photographs to
individuals and art galleries. Fine art
photographers usually sell for very large
sums of money and are sometimes are
made in limited amounts. They are self
motivated artists who work off of their own
ideas and enthusiasm.
Quite a few artists such as David Hockey
use photographic techniques in their work.

Illustration
Photographs can be used to illustrate
magazines, books and websites as instructions,
to show how things work and fit together. They
are mainly used in instruction manuals.
These photos have to be high quality and clear
for the user so that they can understand what
to do.

Magazines

Newspapers

Advertising hoardings

The images used on advertising hoardings

such as billboards have to be high quality
because the original image would need to fit
a wide range of shapes or aspect ratios.

Books

Web pages

CD roms
CD roms were used to store photographs and
share them before the advert of high speed
broadband. After the disk has been burned the
photographs on the CD rom cant be re-edited.

Individual Clients
There is a wide variety of photography that can be
done for individual clients. They range from a simple
identification photo to a family portrait or wedding
photography.
The businesses would use some of the photographs
taken for these clients themselves for their websites
and build themselves promotionally.

Galleries and Museums

Galleries and museums show a wide range of
photographs taken by so many different
photographers. The prints are made to the highest
standard using traditional techniques, such as silver
gelatine. The photographs that are put in exhibitions
require high levels of skill to produce.
