taking proper actions after a storm has passed.

If safe to go outside, carefully
check your home for damage and
make temporary repairs if needed

1. Before a Flood
Identify which roads and
cause ways are likely to
flood and plan an
alternative access route if
necessary. These roads can
usually be identified by
looking for flood level
markers.
If your property is likely to
be isolated in a flood, stock
up on extra non-perishable
supplies including bottled
water and ensure your
emergency kit is up to date
Identify when and where
you would evacuate to if
required.
Ensure your insurance
covers flood damages.

Listen to your local Radio station for
flood updates
If it is flooded, Dont walk, ride or
drive through flood waters
Turn off water , power and gas
supplies
Raise furniture, valuables and
electrical items onto higher floors,
beds , tables or roof spaces.
Ensure the safety of pets, children,
elderly and those with special
needs.
Keep Sand bag at entry points of
your property . Put a sand bag
inside toilets and on top of indoor
drains to prevent sewage back flow.

Dont re-enter your home
until it is declared safe

checked for safety

Sketch a plan of your home, discuss details with your family
Mark where the utility switches or valves are located so that
they can be turned off, if possible
Mark where your emergency food, water, first-aid kits and
fire extinguishers are located
Plan a second exit from each room if possible. If you need
special equipment, such as a rope ladder, mark where it is
located
Indicate the location of your familys emergency outdoor
meeting place
Ensure everyone is aware where the emergency kit is
located

Drop to your hands and knees

Assist your family, give first aid
where appropriate
Extinguish any small fires
Inspect your home for damage ,
if unsafe get your family out
Help your neighbours
Listen to a portable, batteryoperated Radio ( or television)
for updated emergency
information and instructions
Expect aftershocks so move
away from buildings
Watch out for fallen power lines
or broken gas lines, and stay
out of damaged areas

Landslides & Mudslides

1. Before a Landslide/ Mudslide


Assume that steep slopes and areas burned by
wildfires are vulnerable to landslides
Learn whether landslide or debris flows have occurred
previously in your area
Complete the emergency and evacuation plans for
your family
Complete the emergency communication plan in case
family members are separated. Explain emergency
and evacuation plans to your family

Drop to your hands and knees
Listen to the radio or watch TV for warnings about intense
rainfall
Be aware of any sudden increase or decrease in water
level on a stream or creek that might indicate debris flow
upstream
Look for tilted trees, telephone poles, fences or walls and
for new holes or bare spots on hillsides
Listen for rumbling sounds that might indicate an
approaching landslide or mudflow
Be alert when driving
If landslide or debris flow danger is imminent , quickly
move away from the path of the slide
Move to the nearest high ground in a direction away from
the path
