ANALYSIS

A presentation by Csar Elgueta

Meaning

Can

you think of an activity in

which youve had to analyse?

What

do you think youre

supposed to do when a
teacher asks you to analyse?

Now its your turn

Come

up with a definition for analysis.

Meaning
Differentiation and separation of the parts of a whole
until its principles and elements are clearly understood.

What

is analysis?

Examination of a play, a text or anything that can be pron

to intellectual study.

The poem is my whole

Hope Is The Thing With
Feathers
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,
And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.
I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

What are its parts?

The poem is my whole

Hope Is The Thing With
Feathers

Title: The poems

topic

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

The first stanza introduces the topic

And sweetest in the gale is heard;

And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

Development of the metaphor during the

other two stanzas

I've heard it in the chillest land,

And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

How can I relate its parts?

From

the topic I can relate the 3

stanzas.

Dickinson

introduces her metaphor in

the first two lines (Hope is the
thing with feathers / That perches
in the soul), then develops it
throughout the poem by telling what
the bird does (sing), how it reacts to
hardship (it is unabashed in the
storm), where it can be found
(everywhere, from chillest land to
strangest Sea), and what it asks for
itself (nothing, not even a single
crumb). T

What conclusions can I

draw from this?
I

relate the conection among the paragraphs

with my own knowledge or other sources to
draw conclusions.

In

Emilys own words:

What's

the point, you wonder? Why go on?

I've got one word for you: hope. Hope is with
us, every day, every step of the way. It will
be there when you rip your pants at the
school assembly. It will be there when your
pet terrapin dies. It will be there at the very
last game of the season, even though your
favorite team hasn't won all year. Hope,
Shmoopers, is what sustains you.

Steps and Strategiest to Analyse

Step 1
Step
Identify
the2 whole
Identify the parts of the
whole

To analyse, first I must

determine the whole
Use criteria to separate
the parts

Step 3
Develop the meaning and
the relation among the
parts

Connect the parts from

their meaning
