OF SELECTED GRADE- I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Educators in pre-school education are the ones
who are endowed with the capacity and capability
to handle preschoolers with different values and
characteristics on the intellectual, moral and
social aspect.
Environment is an important integral element that
contributes to childs development. It is common
to think that pre-school have variety of needs and
interests especially in a classroom setting. As
preschoolers, they already have their own study
habits and these said habits affect the whole area
of the learning development of the child.

Education is one of the most important things

in life that an individual must have. As it
defined, it is a form of learning in which the
knowledge, skills, and habits of a group to
the next are transferred from one generation
to the next through teaching, training.

Theoretical framework

The word Gestalt means pattern, it

expresses the idea of perceptual whole, or a
total pattern. The Gestalt theory of learning were
first formulated in Germany about 1912.
Prominent names associated with Gestalt
Psychology include; Werthemeimer Koffka and
Kohler. These psychologists believe that the
analysis of conscious experience as practiced
by the assciationists was insufficient to fully
explain the complexities of perception and
behavior. Their emphasis on the perceptional
field as a whole.

Mind, said Thorndike, is man's "connection

system," forming a bond between some
stimuli. Thorndike preferred the word
"situation," recognizing the complexity of many
stimuli and some response made to it by the
learner. All that a man knows, feels, "wants,"
or does is dependent upon his having formed
a connection between some situation and
some response. The term "habit" is equally
useful in accounting for a routine motor act or
for a lefty abstraction; there are no qualitative
differences between simple learning and the
so- called higher mental process.

Statement of the Problem

This study focused its research on the factors that influence
childs study habit of selected grade-1 pupils in Wawa Elementary
School Academic Year 2016-2017.
Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:
1.What is the level of the factors that influence the childs study
habit of selected grade-1 pupils in Wawa Elementary School?
In terms of;
1.1 Family;
1.2 Teacher;
1.3 Classroom environment; and
1.4 Interest to the topic?
2. What is the status of the study habits of the grade I pupils in
Wawa Elementary School?
3. Do internal factor and external factors significantly affect the
child's study habits?

Research Hypothesis

There are no significant factors

affecting the childs study habit
of selected grade-1 pupils in
Wawa Elementary School during
Academic Year 2016-2017.

Scope and Limitation

This study focused on the factors that

influence the childs study habit of selected
grade-1 pupils in Wawa Elementary School in
Lumban,Laguna Academic Year 2016-2017
comprises the following scopes and limitations:
1. The survey is for the thirty (30) parents of the
selected Grade-I Pupils in Wawa Elementary
School in Lumban, Laguna.
2. This study will be conducted at Wawa
Elementary School in Lumban, Laguna.
3. It aims to find out the factors that influence
the childs study habit.

Significance of the study

The findings of this study aimed to merit the following:

Curriculum Designer. They would strive hard in

developing curriculum that is suitable and appropriate to
the needs of the pupils.
Future Researchers. This study will serve as guide and
reference for future studies and happenings.
Parents. This would help them to become more aware
to the factors that influence their childs study habits.
Students. It will benefit them in a way that they will be
given more effective ways to developed their study habit.
Teachers. It will help them to find more ways to
encourage and motivate the pupils on their learning
area.

Related Literature

According to Crede, M., Kuncel, N.

(2008) Study habit and skill
measures the improve prediction of
performance more than any other
non- cognitive individual difference
variable examined to date and
should be regarded as the third
pillar of academic success.

Families throughout the world bear

primary responsibility for meeting
childrens physical needs, nurturing
children, and socializing them (Turnbull,
Turnbull, Erwin, & Soodak, 2007). Family
members have long- term attachments to
children, providing links to their past as
well as visions for their future (GonzalezMena & Eyer, 2009).

Teacher efficacy, a belief by teachers that they

have the skills necessary to teach all the
students effectively, positively influences
students achievement (Tschannen-Moran,
Woolfolk- Hoy, & Hoy, 2010).
Teachers develop outcome expectations ( a
belief that all students can learn the material)
and efficacy expectations ( beliefs about their
own ability to help all the children learn)
(Ashton & Webb, 2007; Gibson & Dembo,
2008).

Related Studies

Based on the study of Peralta (2013),

study habits are defined as the
regular tendencies and practices that
one depicts during the process of
gaining information through learning.
Your study habits play a big role in
determining your success in the
learning process.

. The nature of the family has a

significant influence on the study habits
of students with respect to preparation
for examination and school environment
(Rajendran et al.; 2009).Sagacious
parenting may inculcate within the
adolescent, a determination to live up to
the expectations of parents. Overall, it
may be observed that good parenting
has a strong relationship with study
habit.

According to Muleyi (2008), teachers do

influence students academic
performance. School variables that affect
students academic performance include
the kind of treatment which teachers
accord the students. Odhiambo (2007)
contends that there is a growing demand
from the Kenya government and the public
for teacher accountability. Schools are
commonly evaluated using students
achievement data (Heck, 2009).

Research Design

This study employed descriptive

type of research which involves the
collection of data to test the
hypothesis concerning the factors
that influence the grade- I pupils
study habit.

Sampling and Techniques

Purposive sampling was used.

This kind of sampling is based on
selecting the individuals as
samples according to the
purposes of the researcher as
her controls.

The researcher made use of checklist in

gathering data. It was administered to the
respondents by checking the corresponding
answers. The statements are rated by the use of
scale with corresponding values

It was administered to the respondents

by checking the corresponding answers.

The researcher presented the finished

questionnaire and prepared a letter to the school
principal of Wawa Elementary School and
requested for the permission of the concerned
authorities

Statistical Treatment
The data for this study were gathered, tabulated
and analyzed using Mean and Standard Deviation
to describe the status of the factors that influence
the study habit of grade-I pupils as to Family,
Teacher, Classroom Environment and Interest to
the topic of the child. Pearson Product Moment
Coefficient Correlation (Pearson r) was used to
compute and describe the relationship of the
status of the factor that influence the study habit
of selected grade-I pupils in Wawa Elementary
School during School Year 2016-2017.
