NASA: Established in 1959, NASAs mission is to pioneer the future in

space exploration, scientific discovery, and aeronautics research.

NASA/JPL wanted to find a means of using the Web to make large

amounts of information about Mars available to the public, while
engaging people in the excitement of discovery and in improving their
own knowledge and skills in science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics

NASA/JPL worked with Microsoft to create an interactive, visually fun and

appealing Web site called BeAMartian with Windows Azure

Benefits:
Windows Azure offers unparalleled scale
During one period of activity shortly after the launch, the sitewhich was running on
Rapid scale out & global reach 10 serversexperienced a large spike in visitor traffic. It took site managers less
than 10 minutes to make an additional 20 servers available using the cloud, which
was more than enough to handle the sudden increase in activity.

Pottermore: Windows Azure offered Pottermore the flexibility required to build a massively
scalable website in just three months. Live April 14 th, 2012

Pottermore attracted 1 billion page views in a little over two weeks

More than 10 million unique users to date have visited the site

The average user visits 43 pages and spends 20 minutes on the site

The site continues to attract 25,000 new account sign-ups daily

Benefits:
Capacity planning was an incredible challenge
Started on premises; customer demand blew away all scale expectations
Azure provides virtually unlimited scale on demand as needed
Shifted focus to delivering the best experience

The tools with Azure are really brilliant, and theyre getting better every
month. Its clearly a platform thats being invested in by Microsoft and by
many, many others who see its potential.
-Julian Thomas, CTO at
Pottermore

MMS 2009 vs. MMS 2010 Labs
MMS 2009: Used ~570 servers in 36 racks
MMS 2010: Used 41 servers in 3 racks

Green IT: Servers

570 servers * 200 watts per server = 114,000 watts
41 servers * 200 watts per server = 8,200 watts
13.9x Power Reduction on Servers

Green IT: Rich Clients vs. Thin Clients

650 rich clients * 120 watts per client = 78,000 watts
650 thin clients * 19 watts per client = 12,350 watts
