Chapter 2 Gravity Quay

2.3
2.3 General Calculation for Gravity Quay

1 Calculation content
1.1
Three design situations
persistent situation
Transient situation
accidental situation
Two limit states
The ultimate limit state(ULS)
The service-ability limit state(SLS)

1 Calculation content
persistent situation

ULS and SLS should govern design in the service period of structures.
Transient situation

ULS may, and if necessary, SLS should also be required to , govern design, when some
special loads are applied temporarily during construction or in the earlier service
period.
accidental situation

Only ULS governs design when the earthquake action is encountered in the service
period.

1.2 j persistent situation
The persistent combination of actions in the ultimate limit state design of
the gravity quays, the followings should be calculated or checked:
1)Stability against overturning with regard to the toe in calculation faces
such as wall bottom, each horizontal jiont and toothed joint in the wall.
2)Stability against sliding along the wall bottom and each horizontal joint
in the wall
3)Stability against sliding along the foundation bed bottom
4)Bearing capacities of the foundation bed and the soil foundation
5)Position of action point of resultant force on the wall bottom

1.2 j persistent situation
1)Overall stability
2)Bearing capacities fo structure elements such as relieving
slabs, caissons, buttresses, hollow blocks and open cylindrical
caissons etc.

2.2 the excess water pressure

The difference between low water level and under-ground

water level at the back of the wall

the excess water pressure may be negligible when the riprap

prism is made at the back of wall or the filling materials are
coarser than medium sand.
