>70% of Indias population- rural areas- dependent on low value
agriculture
Slow pace of industrialisation, poor infrastructure, limited opportunities
for productive economic activities- distressed economy
Lack of access to reliable power- main causes for low economic growth,

Annual per capita power consumption (~290 kWh) in NE < 1/3 rd of
National average
Peak demand for power (2,528 MW in 2015)- just over 1/4th of peak
demand Haryana
World Bank - working with GOI & several state governments in the NEto improve the availability of reliable power supply to the region.
Project- help improve the transmission & distribution infrastructure in 6
major states of the region -- Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram,
Nagaland and Tripura where 1/3rd of electricity in the system is lost

OBJECTIVE: To increase the delivery of electricity at the boundaries


of the power distribution network in the participating states in the
North Eastern Region

Priority Investments for Strengthening Intrastate Transmission, Subtransmission, and Distribution Systems- upgrading old lines,
constructing new 220, 132, 66 an 33kV lines in the 6 participating
