VARIETIES OF
RELIGION
MOHAMMEDAN
is a term for a follower of theIslamic
prophet Muhammad. It is used as
both
anounand
anadjective,
meaning belonging or relating to,
either Muhammad or the religion,
doctrines, institutions and practices
that he established. The word was
formerly common in usage, but the
termsMuslimandIslamicare
more
common today. Though sometimes
used stylistically by some Muslims, a
vast majority consider the term a
misnomer.
BUDDHISM
CONFUCIANISM
Is a way of life taught by Confucius in the
6th5th century BCE. Sometimes viewed
as a philosophy, sometimes as a religion,
Confucianism is perhaps best understood
as an all-encompassing humanism that
neither denies nor slights heaven.
Confucianism has been followed by the
Chinese for more than two millennia.
It has deeply influenced spiritual and
political life in China; its influence has also
extended to Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.
East Asians may profess themselves to be
Shintoists, Taoists, Buddhists, Muslims, or
Christians - but seldom do they cease to
be Confucians.
HINDUISM
is the religion of the majority of people in
India and Nepal. It also exists among
significant populations outside of the sub
continent and has over 900 million
adherents worldwide.
Unlike most other religions, Hinduism has
no single founder, no single scripture, and
no commonly agreed set of teachings.
ZOROASTRIANISM
although the smallest of the major
religions of the world in the number
of its adherents, is historically one of
the most important. Its roots are in
the proto-Indo-European spirituality
that also produced the religions of
India. It was the first of the worlds
religions to be founded by an inspired
prophetic reformer. It was influential
on Mahayana Buddhism and
especially on the Abrahamic religions
of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
JEWISH/JUDAISM
In the Bible, Jews were called
Hebrews or Children of Israel
The terms "Jew" and "Judaism" come
from the tribe or kingdom of Judah
"Jew" now refers to all physical and
spiritual descendants of Jacob
A person can be Jewish by birth or by
conversion
Traditionally, Jewish status passes
through the mother, not the father.
SHINTOISM
Shinto ("the way of the gods") is the
indigenous faith of the Japanese people
and as old as Japan itself. It remains
Japan's majorreligionalongsideBuddhism.
"Shinto gods" are calledkami. They are
sacred spirits which take the form of things
and concepts important to life, such as
wind, rain, mountains, trees, rivers and
fertility. Humans become kami after they
die and are revered by their families as
ancestral kami. The kami of extraordinary
people are even enshrined at some
shrines. The Sun Goddess Amaterasu is
considered Shinto's most important kami.
ANIMISM
belief in innumerable spiritual beings
concerned with human affairs and capable
of helping or harming human interests.
Animistic beliefs were first competently
surveyed by Sir Edward Burnett Tylorin his
work Primitive Culture (1871), to which is
owed the continued currency of the term.
While none of the major world religions are
animistic (though they may contain
animistic elements), most other religions
e.g., those of tribal peoplesare. For this
reason, an ethnographic understanding of
animism, based on field studies of tribal
peoples, is no less important than a
theoretical one, concerned with the nature

Educational Implications
It is important for everyone to have a religion in
view of the role that religion plays in ones life.
Since religion influences behavior, one should
choose ones religion wisely.
Since the nature and function of all religions are
the same, there should be tolerance of all
religions.
One should study ones religion well and live it.
Apply the teachings of religion to self, family,
community and the world.
