Topic
Renewable Energy Resources within VIT.
VIT has taken very strong and proactive

attitude towards its environment.

And as a result many greenery projects are
taken up.
Example:
Green Vellore
Palar Project

Renewable Energy Resources

Renewable energyis energy that is

generated from natural processes which

continuously replenish.
This energy cannot be exhausted and is
constantly renewed.
This includes sunlight, geothermal heat, wind,
tides, water, and various forms of biomass
(Resources).

Renewable Energy Resources

within VIT
Solar Energy,
Solar dish stirling engine power plant,
Solar water heater,
Solar photovoltaic panel tree,
Biodiesel heavy vehicles,
Bio-mass power plant,
Solar Cars,
Green drapes.

Solar Energy
In 2001, VIT wanted to install a 100 KW

solar power plant costing rupees 4CR.

But could install a plant of 8.25 KW
capacity only costing about rupees 40 lakh.
To make use of most of the stored energy,
VIT used low-energy consuming 12 watt
LED lights helping to cut the power by over
75%.

Solar Energy
contd,
VITs latest 2 MW plant was commissioned in

2014, meeting more than 12% of its 3.8 MW

(per hour) energy needs from renewable
sources.
In 2015, a 500 kW setup was commissioned
which can produce approximately 2500 units,
every day.
Another 500 kW plant installation is in pipe
line.

Solar dish stirling engine power

plant
A fully operational 10 kW solar dish stirling

engine power plant (INR 8 million) was

imported with a solar dish collector in order to
produce electricity
The working gas can be helium or hydrogen.

Solar water heater

A 500 litre solar water heater installed in the

academic campus supplements the preheated water demand in campus.

Most of the hostel buildings are equipped with
solar water heater.

Solar photovoltaic panel tree

Also, VITs CO2 Research and Green

Technologies Centre is developing a solar

photovoltaic panel tree for VIT.
It is capable of producing 16 kW per tree
through 16 branches at different levels.
This will cut down the land required to
produce solar energy by 50%, from 5 acres
per MW to 2.5 acres per MW.

Biodiesel heavy vehicles

Since 2012, busses operating within the

campus are powered with 30% biodiesel.

It had covered more than 60,000 km without
any breakdown.
A Laboratory model glass unit produces the
biodiesel using Pongamia and Jatropha oil.

Bio-mass power plant

Also in 2003, it commissioned a grid

interactive bio-mass power plant, producing

approximately 1500 units per day.
This output is channelled to students hostels
through the internal grid.
A government grant helped meet part of the
expenses of this project, which meets 1 to
1.2% of the universitys energy requirement.

Solar Cars
A solar powered (255W x 4 solar panels) 12

seater car equipped with a pair of 3.7 kW DC

motor, christened as the Green Energy
Vehicle, is fully operational (nearly 8 hours a
day) during the working hours.

Green drapes
A physical green drape on high-rise buildings

save considerable amount in buildings annual

energy consumption.
The green drape subway walls also absorb the
entire atmospheric pollutants spewed by the
vehicular emissions.

Suggestions
VIT doesnt follow few methods of renewable

energy generation but it could follow them.

So these both are what I suggest that can be
followed inside University.
I. Biogas
II. Electric Solar Photo Voltaic Power Plant

SUGGESTION 1
Biogas
A 300 m3 biogas plant production using the

sludge from the waste water treatment plant.

When we convert biogas toelectricity, in a
biogas powered electric generator, we get
about 2 kWh of useableelectricity, the rest
turns into heat which can also be used for
heating applications.

SUGGESTION 2
Electric Solar Photo Voltaic Power Plant
A 6.5 kW Electric Solar Photo Voltaic Power

Plant should be established in VIT Vellore as it

is in VIT Chennai.
It can provide continuous and adequate
power back up throughout the day for
computer systems, devices and peripherals.
