Introduction

10-16% fuel energy is used against resistance from road and

air drag.
Kinetic energy dissipated is an important loss.
Spring and Damper.
Dissipate vibration energy into heat to attenuate the
vibration.
Converts variable frequency , repetitive intermittent linear
motion to useful electrical energy.
Regenerative suspension utilize this energy into useful
energy

Suspension System

System support load and isolates the occupants of a vehicle

from road disturbances.
Function
1.To support the weight of the body
2.Enable the wheels to hold on road.
3.Ride comfort.
4.Noise comfort.
5.To isolate the vehicle chassis from road disturbances

Need of Regenerative Suspension

Suspension is an important source of energy

dissipation.
Instead of dissipation of vibration to waste heat ,
it allows the kinetic energy to useful energy.
Converted energy can be used to power vehicle
electronics.
Improves the vehicle fuel efficiency.

Types of Regenerative Suspension

System

Mechanical Regenerative System

Hydraulic/Pneumatic
Electromagnetic Regenerative System
Rack and Pinion
Linear type
Ball screw
Self powered magneto rheological

Linear Type Regenerative Suspension

System
It uses Faraday law of EMI.

It uses linear motion electromagnetic system(LMES)

Bottom shaft of PGSA mounts to moving suspension member
Forces the magnet stack to reciprocate within the annular array of
stator winding , thus producing AC.
AC produced is converted to DC through a full wave rectifier.

Stored in vehicle batteries
It uses an electronic system to monitor the dampening
quickly by switching the stator coil rings required on each
wheel suspension.
The stator coil produces strong dampening force which
can then be varied for desperate road condition by
switching coil as needed.

Rack and pinion PGSA

It convert linear motion of suspension vibration into rotary

motion to drive dc generator.

Capable of generating more power and getting larger

damping coefficient.
Uses a pair of bevel gears to change the transmission by 90

degree.
Planetary gear box are used to increase the speed or to

amplify the speed from the rack and pinion.

In order to reduce friction and backlash , in this design a
roller is used to guide the rack
Teflon ring is used in cylinders
Use filter with steel wire screen at the top to prevent dirt
into the cylinder

Road Test

Road test carried using Chevrolet Surburban (2002 model)

By using a laser displacement sensor ,the displacement of the rear
shock absorber is recorded.
Output voltage is recorded with a digital signal analyzer
The road test were conducted on a campus road of Stony Brook
university
Test were carried at different speed of 30,20,10 mph

Vehicle Information

Measured suspension vibration velocity

and estimated power

Displacement and voltage measurement

at 30 mph

Displacement and voltage measurement

at 10mph

Displacement and voltage measurement

at 20 mph

Result

It can be seen that peak voltages were over

40volts
Corresponding peak power are 67.5-58.2W
The average power is 4.8W and 3.3W at 30
and 20mph
Or 19.2W and 13.2W can be harvested on four
shock absorber at 30mph and 20mph.

Advantage

Less space required

Advantage for military situation
Improves vehicle handling as because of the sensors
Energy is produced near the speed breakers as well as near
ditches on even slightly uneven roads
Used to power the electronics components of the vehicle

Disadvantage

As the system consist of electrical wiring , short circuit

may occur
If the system breakdown it is difficult and costly affair to
repair it
It requires high precision machinery and need skilled
workers to manufacture

Application

For vehicle using electric energy as fuel.

New researches are taken to use it in Ocean
Power Generating System.

Conclusion

Helps to recycle the wasted energy.

Allows fuel saving(1.5-5%).
It can harvest a large amount of power in very
short time.
