Excel Tutorial

MM 217

Spreadsheet
A type of application program which
Manipulates numerical and string
data in rows and columns of cells.
The value in a cell can be calculated
from a formula which can involve
other cells.
A value is recalculated automatically
whenever a value (On which operation
is done) on which it depends
changes.
Different cells may be displayed with

Workbook
1. A booklet containing problems and exercises
that a student may work directly on the
pages.
2. A manual containing operating instructions,
as for an appliance or machine.
3. A book in which a record is kept of work
proposed or accomplished.
Worksheet
2. A sheet of paper with multiple columns;
used by an accountant to assemble figures
for financial statements.
3. A piece of paper recording work planned or
done on a project.

The Basics

Open Excel.
By default, Excel will open a blank workbook that
Contains one worksheet (spreadsheet).

Each box, located in both a column and a row, is called a ce

Working With Data

Data that is organized in columns or rows
can utilize various formatting methods.
Microsoft Excel can import these various
types of data.
Data can be separated from the different
format files such as (.csv) and (.txt)
Data is separated in such files with
Commas
Tabs or spaces

You can rename

the new sheet by
right clicking on its
tab at the bottom,
and selecting
Rename from
the menu.

Charts and Graphs

You can
also launch
the Chart
Wizard by
selecting
Insert/Char
t.

Notice that the Chart toolbar appears

when you insert a chart. You can edit
the charts properties at any time.

Formulas and Functions

Formulas are equations that perform
calculations on values in your worksheet.
A formula starts with an equal sign (=). For
example, the following formula multiplies
2 by 3 and then adds 5 to the result.
=5+2*3
Functions are predefined formulas that
perform calculations by using specific
values, called arguments, in a particular
order, or structure. Functions can be used
to perform simple or complex calculations.

A variety of functions
are available. In cell
L21, I can use the
average function to
determine a yearly
average for forecasted
revenue.
fx=AVERAGE(I19:K19) or

Math and more

You can use formulas to:
Solve mathematical problems
Complete statistical and financial functions
Return numerical and text values based on other
cells
Add and format text in cells
Mathematical Equation
All formulas begin with an equal (=) sign
Data that is stored in the worksheet and that
needs to be used in a formula is referenced using
the cells address
=A1+A2/(A3-A4)

college and number of boys in the
college is given

(i) Find the mean, mode and median of the

(Girls : Boys) ratio of the colleges?
(ii) By what percent is the ratio (girls : boys)
in the IIT with maximum number of boys
more/less than the IIT with maximum
number of girls?

3 . Given below are the distances(in

meters) between two stops of the
TumTums.
All the TumTums connect ONLY two stops. ie.
A tumtum from H13 to Main gate will connect
only H13 and Maingate; not H8 or SOM.
Tumtums run between the following stops
(both to and fro): [H8 H13]; [Main Gate
H5]; [H5-YP];[YP - SOM]; [SOM-H13]; [H8
H5]; [YP Main Gate]; [H8 - SOM]

5. A modern artist uses only regular

polygons in his paintings. In his one
of the most famous paintings he
has used the following polygons.
(i) Assuming that the length of a side of a
polygon is equal to number of sides in cm; For
example: A polygon with 3 sides will have
length of each side equal to 3cm. What is the
median and mean length of sides (or lines) in
the painting?
(ii) What percent of the total number of
vertices in the painting have a diagonally
opposite vertex?

6. Plot the favorable chart for the

following data of respective
questions.
(i)Given data is of CO2 emissions from fossil fuel
combustion in India in 2013, by main sector and
fuel type (billion tonnes of CO2).
(ii) Mentioned data is on trends in CO2
emissions per country, 2004-2014 (unit: billion
tonnes of CO2).
(iii) Population share of States and Union
Territories, India: 2011.

adults and children.
2. A total amount for the cost of the reception ($17.50 per adult,
children only cost 67% of this amount). Dont forget to add on
the 8.25% tax.
