Seawall Design

considerations

Definitions

Seawall a structure separating land from sea (RMS)

A sea wall is a man-made structure that will protect the shoreline
from waves and subsequent erosion. Not only can a sea wall prevent
erosion, but it can also aid in the protection of any man-made
structures near the beach, such as homes and parks (Renegar
Construction)
Revetment and inclined face of stone, concrete or synthetic
material protecting an embankment from waves or currents (RMS)

SEAWALL TYPES
1. Vertical Sea Walls Just like the name implies, vertical sea
walls are essentially a vertical wall built to keep the high
energy of the waves from eroding the shorelines. These sea
walls are best for areas that have a countless number larger
waves for long periods of time. While they prevent the
shoreline from being eroded. as such, they may need regular
maintenance and repairs.

Key design considerations

Methodology deterministic or probabilistic

Key dimensions (e.g. wall height)
Environmentally friendly with case study

Methodology deterministic or probabilistic

Deterministic design to resist design event (eg storm) with

acceptable safety margin
Argued by some that deterministic is conservative, and by
others that deterministic risk can vary substantially.

Probabilistic approach is to use reliability/risk

analysis
methods.
