Grounding
ODU Grounding
The system uses a Shielded CAT-5 cable to interconnect the ODU/IDU.
However, this shielding does not provide a good Lightning Discharge path, since it can not
tolerate the high Lightning Current surges.
In order to provide an alternate Lightning Discharge path, the ODU/Antenna Grounding posts
should be connected to a Ground Point by a 10 AWG short copper wire, as per NEC 810-21

IDU Grounding
The IDUs grounding post should be connected to the internal Ground point, merely for Safety
and ESD protection reasons.

External Lightning Surge Suppressors

In order to minimize direct Lightning damages, an external well grounded CAT-5 Lightning
Protector should be mounted outside the building, located as near as possible to the entrance
of the CAT-5 ODU-IDU interconnection cable.
3-rd party protectors may be used, e.g. Motorolas 300SS, Hyperlinks HGLN-CAT5 or Sixnets
SP-ETH-2

Internal ESD Protection circuits

The system is designed to meet the ETSI / FCC /Aus/NZ / CSA EMC and Safety requirements
In order to fulfill these requirements, the systems Telecom lines at the ODU/IDU are
14
RADWIN
Training Center and include
Transformer-isolated
internal ESD (Electro-Static-Discharge) Protection circuits

Grounding the ODU / IDU

One of the major factors for RMAs is lack of grounding!

Link Installation Wizard Single VS. Dual

Single and Dual Antennas
Each RADWIN 2000 ODU is made of two radio
transceivers (radios). The radios make use of
algorithms that utilize both MIMO and
Diversity resulting in enhanced capacity, range
and link availability. The number of antennas
(i.e. radios) used is determined by user
configuration and by automatic system
decisions, explained below.
Dual Antennas at Both Sites
When using Dual antennas at both sites (single
bipolar antenna or two uni-polar antennas) you
can choose between MIMO Mode and Diversity
Mode.
MIMO Mode
With MIMO the system doubles the link
capacity. At the same time, it keeps the same
rate and modulation per radio as was used with
single antenna, thus increasing capacity, range
and availability.

To work in MIMO mode, each antenna port

must be connected to an antenna, the RSS level
in both receivers should be balanced and a
minimal separation between the antennas must
be maintained.
By using dual polarization antennas a cross
polarization separation is attained.
Upon selecting Antenna Type as Dual, RADWIN
2000 automatically selects MIMO mode and
doubles the air rates.
RADWIN Manager indicates a case of
RADWIN
Training RSS between the two antennas.

Link Installation Wizard Antennas Modes

Single Antenna, Both Sites:
By selecting a single antenna at
both sites, the ODUs operate
with a single radio that is
connected to the ANT 1
connector (the 2nd radio is
automatically shut down).

RADWIN Training
Center

35

Link Installation Wizard Antennas Modes

Single at One Site, Dual
Antennas at the Other:
The advantages are doubled
total Tx Power and additional
polarization and/or space
diversity (depending on the
polarization of installed
antennas).
The air rates used in this mode
are same as when using single
antennas in both sites.

RADWIN Training
Center

36

Link Installation Wizard Reading EIRP

The Tx Power (per radio) indicates
the power of each radio inside the
ODU and is used for Link Budget
Calculations. The Tx Power
(System) shows the total
transmission power of the ODU and
is used to calculate the EIRP
according to regulations.
The Max EIRP level will be
automatically set according to the
selected band and regulation.
EIRP =
max Tx Power + Antenna Gain Cable Loss
X [dBm] = 10 x log Y[mW]
If you double the power in mW (for
two radios) then dBm will increase
by 3dB:
RADWIN
Training
40mW
= 16dBm 37
Center

80mW = 19dBm

Link Installation Wizard HSS

One of the radios in the site is
defined as HSS Master and
generates synchronization pulses.
The other collocated radios in the
site the HSS Clients, are
connected to the HSS Master and
synchronize their transmission to
the pulses.
An HSS Client can be configured to
work in one of two modes:
HSS ClientContinue Transmission
(HSCCT): If the unit loses
synchronization with the HSS Master,
the link remains active. However,
without synchronization pulses, it is
possible that this unit will cause
interference.
HSS ClientDisable Transmission
(HSCDT): If the unit loses
synchronization with the HSS Master,
RADWIN
the linkTraining
is dropped until
38 the
Center
synchronization pulses resume. This

Link Installation Wizard About eHSS

Sync Frames
Sync frames are exchanged between collocated ODUs using Layer2
broadcasting.

Domain
To prevent network flooding, each group of collocated ODUs is configured with an
internal domain name. The default name must be changed to prevent sync
frames being received over the LAN by another ODU, which could be then
mistakenly configured as a client of an HSM at the wrong location.

VLAN

VLAN is used to separate sync

frames from traffic so as to give
sync frames highest priority.

If you have collocated ODUs

running close to full capacity,
failure to do so, would result in
excessive jitter and dropped
traffic frames.

By default, the VLAN ID 1997 and

priority 7 are reserved for HSS.
You may change the VLAN ID but
not the priority.

Link Installation Wizard RFP for HSS

1. If you mix RADWIN 2000 and WinLink 1000 units in a collocated site, you
must use RFP B or E
2. Selection of the RFP influences the capacity, latency and TDM quality
3. RFP influences capacity and latency. Jitter buffer configuration can be used to
set the TDM quality
4. Using the LBC, you can see the affect of the RFP on the Ethernet throughput.
5. The choice of the unit to be the HSS master is a matter of convenience.
There is no technical reason to prefer a WinLink 1000 over a RADWIN 2000
as HSS master or vice versa.
6. It is however, recommended that you use the RADWIN 2000 as master, since
it will enforce the correct RFP on the other collocated units.

Monitored Hot Standby (MHS) 1+1

Redundant/Backup to TDM
services

Providing protection against:

Using a primary link and a

secondary link can be done with:

Equipment failure (ODU and IDU)

Loss of air interface

2 RADWIN 2000 links

1 RADWIN 2000 link and 1 WinLink
1000 link
2 WinLink 1000 links

Provide redundancy and high

reliability for carrier class
operators

Monitored Hot Standby (MHS) 1+1

Optimized for high capacity

links operating in license-free
bands
Additional values:

Each link can use a different band

for maximum protection to the air
interface.
Affordable SLA can be offered by
protecting part of the RADWIN
2000 trunks with WinLink 1000

Switching scenarios:

Failure in ODU or IDU (local or

remote)

Loss of primary air interface (sync

loss)

Loss of TDM data for 24msec

(when TDM is transmitted)

Automatic switching time <

50msec
