random variables
Classify random variables
as discrete or continuous
Give example of discrete
and continuous variables.

Activity 1. Determine the possible outcomes of the

following.

2 blue shirts and 3 red shorts

2. Drawing two ball in a box with
5 red balls, 2 green balls and
1 white ball.
3. Tossing 5-peso coin thrice
1.

Sample space
- set of all possible outcomes
Experiment
1. Tossing three coins
2. Rolling a die
3. Rolling two dice

4. Drawing a spade card

in deck.

What is a variable?
have

properties or
characteristics that takes on
different values, these
properties or characteristics
are called variables

Examples:
What

is your height?
What province where you born in?
What type of movies do you enjoy
watching?
How many are you in the family?
How old is your mother?

Random variables
A

variable that itself a function

of the result of a statistical
experiment in which outcome
has a definite probability.
The variables whose values are
determined by chance.

Classified:
a. discrete random
variable
b. Continuous random
variable.

1. Discrete random variable.

The

set of possible outcomes is countable

Data that are be counted.
Examples
the

number of days

the

ages or survey respondents measured to the

nearest year

the number of patients in a hospital.

number

of male and female students

Number

of chairs in each classroom

2. Continuous Variable
data

are those that can be measured

such as height , weight , temperature,
time,etc.
Examples:
Amount
Time

of sugar per cup of coffee

to finish exam.

Speed
Height

of car
of MR. ED

Classify the following:

Discrete or Continuous
1.defective

computers produced by
manufacturer.
2.weight of newborns each year in a
hospital
3.siblings in each family.
4.Dropped out students per year
5.Flour needed to bake cakes

How

do you find the values of

random variables?

How

do you know whether a

random variable is continuous or
discrete.

Classify the following:

Discrete or Continuous
1.

Speed of motorbike

2.

Female athletes represent spnhs

3.

Book in the library

4.

Votes favoring a candidates

5.

Amount of electricity consume per house

6.

Length of wires in fixing cables

7.

Pages of each book

8.

Weight of students

9.

Amount of waters contained by different

containers

10.Trees

in a park
