Indian's Clothing in Malaysia

INTRODUCTION
Malaysian Indian
Many of them are descendants from those
who migrated from India during the British
colonisation of Malaya.
They form the third largest ethnic group in
Malaysia after the Chinese and
the Malays.

Women:
Saree
Mundum Neriyathum
Ghagra Choli
Shalwar Kameez
Langa Voni

SAREE
A very long strip of unstitched cloth, ranging
from 4-9 meters in length.
Most graceful dress of women, it elegantly
covers the womans entire body by showing
genuine curves in the most dignified way.
Pallay (a part of the saree) is drawn on the
head to pay due respect to the elders or
while attending ceremonies.

the traditional garment
choice for brides
in Indian culture.
Indian Christian brides
dress modestly in a
white saree with a long
sleeve white blouse.

Styles of Draping
Nivi (sari drape)
Pleats are passed through
the legs and tucked into the
waist at the back
Gujarati
From back to the front from
the right side, the end of the
pallu is attached at the back
securing it properly

Maharashtrian
An extra-long cloth is used
and the ends are then passed
up over the shoulders and the
upper body
Gond
The cloth is first draped over
the left shoulder, then
arranged to cover the body.

MUNDUM NERIYATHUM
The oldest remnant of the
ancient form of the saree
which covered only the
lower part of the body.
Could be worn in the
traditional style with
theneriyathu tucked inside
the blouse,or in the modern
style with the neriyathu worn
over the left shoulder.

Traditionally white or cream in colour and


consists of two pieces of cloth :
Mundu - The surviving form of lower
garment of the ancient clothing.
Neriyathu - The modern adaptation of thin
scarf worn from the right shoulder to left
shoulder.

GHAGRA CHOLI
Also known as Lehenga
choli.
The traditional clothing of
women in Rajasthan,
Gujarat, and also Punjab.
A combination outfit of a
Lehenga, tight Choli and
a Dupatta.

Parts
Choli
Cropped design; usually cropped, allowing
exposure of the navel.
Lehenga
A form of skirt which is long, embroidered
and pleated; worn as the bottom portion;
secured at the waist and leaves the lower
back and midriff bare.

Dupatta
A shawl or large scarf that
is worn together with the
lehenga and the choli.
Worn as a symbol of
modesty; many wear it as
just a decorative
accessory.

SHALWAR KAMEEZ
A generic term used to describe different
styles of dress.
The shalwar and the kameez are two
garments which have been combined to
form the shalwar kameez outfit.
Shalwar - loose pajama-like trousers
Kameez - a long shirt or tunic

Different forms of Shalwar Kameez


Anarkali suit
Named after the court
dancer from Lahore.
Made up of a long,
frock-style top and
features a slim fitted
bottom.

Punjabi suit
The kameez being cut
straight and flat with
side slits.
The shalwar is wide
at the top but fits
closely to the legs
and is gathered at the
ankles.

LANGA VONI
A traditional dress worn mainly by young
girls between puberty and marriage.
Symbolizes their singlehood.
Also known as the two-piece saree or half
saree.
Girls younger than this may wear it on
special occasions.

Langa (Paavadai) - a
skirt which is tied
around the waist
using string
Voni - a cloth which is
draped diagonally
over a choli; shorter;
less restrictive

DHOTI
Known as vetti or mardani, is
a traditional men's garment.
Considered formal wear all
over the country.
Usually white or cream in
colour, although colourful
hues are used for specific
religious occasions.

The first style - around four yards in length


and is simply wrapped around the waist,
resembling a long skirt.
The second style - folding an eight-yardlong garment around the waist, tying the
top ends in front like a belt and then
tucking in the loose left and right ends
behind.

LUNGI
Also known as a sarong, is a
traditional garment worn
around the waist.
Are sometimes sewn into a
tube shape like a skirt, and
are especially worn in hot
regions.
Can be used in different
cultural activities, ranging from
normal daily life to elaborate
wedding ceremonies.

TURBAN
Safa
Made from a single strip of colorful cloth
measuring around 30 feet long and 4 feet
wide.
The color, shape and size of a turban are
an indicator of a mans origin, profession
and position in Indian society.

It uses in wedding
parties, cultural parties
political parties, religious
works, ring ceremony
parties, in wedding for
baraties.
It is basically use for the
men, each and every age
grade have a different
kind of safa

Peaked turban
Males following the Sikh religion most
commonly wear a peaked turban.
Their faith dictates that they should not cut
their hair, so the turban allows them to
neatly stow it.

Ex: Dastar
Sikh men commonly wear a
peaked turban to cover
their long hair, which is
never cut out of respect for
God's creation.

CONCLUSION
The traditional clothing of Indian has
modified to modern style which are more
interested by the new generation now.
Although the modern style of clothing are
existed, we still need to know the
traditional style of Indian's clothing
because it was our tradition,we have to
appericiate it.
