Introduction:
Sustainable architecture is architecture that seeks to
minimize the negative environmental impact of the buildings
by efficiency and moderation in the use of materials, energy
and development space.
Sustainable architecture uses a conscious approach to in the
aspects of energy and ecological conservation in the design
of built environment.
As per the world commission 1987, sustainable architecture
means An architecture meeting the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations to
meet their own needs.
The term sustainable architecture is the combination of two
different meaning of words i.e. Sustainable pulse
Architecture.

Sustainable:

Con:
Architecture
Is the art of practice of designing and constructing buildings to follow
both aspects of art & science.
It deals the style in which the building is designed or constructed
especially with regard to specific period, place and culture.

Sustainable + Architecture
When both combine, they reduce the negative impact on the
environment as well as human health at the same time thus improve
the performance during a buildings life cycle.
It will give careful consideration on
Building designs,
Building materials,
Building construction methods,
Energy,

However, sustainable architecture is the preparation of
increasing the efficiency of buildings and their use of:

Energy,
Water,
Materials and
It Reducing the building impacts on human health and
environment through better

Design,
Construction,
Operation,
Maintenance and Waste removal/re-use

Con:
Sustainable architecture is an effort to minimize the
negative environmental impact of the buildings by using
specific materials, energy and development space through
strict moderation and efficiency.
The important goal of the sustainable architecture is energy
efficiency over the entire life of building.
Across the globe, buildings account for
o

40% of energy use,

o 38% of greenhouse gas emissions,
o 12% of potable water and
o 20% of solid waste streams in developed
countries.

So sustainable architecture is the easiest and least costly

way to address climate change and save out Earth of
Mother from damage.

Principle of Sustainable Architecture:

The development of sustainable architecture is based on
basic principles to minimize or eliminate the negative impact
on environment and to maximize human living with better
health while in creation and construction of buildings.
The broad principles of sustainable architecture are: Economy of Resources;
Life Cycle Design;
Humane Design.
Economy of Resources:Which means, the use of various resources in architecture
should follow principle of economy i.e. a financial saving or
an attempt to reduce expenditure through various ways like:
Energy conservation,
Water conservation,
Material conservation etc.

Con:
Life Cycle Design:
Life cycle design is cradle-to-grave (cradle = the place
where something begins, grave = end of something)
approach recognizes environmental consequences of the
entire life cycle architectural resources from procurement to
return to nature.
Life cycle design is based on an idea that a material
transmigrates from one form of useful life to another, with no
end to its usefulness.
Life cycle design provides a methodology for analyzing the
building process and its impacts on the environment.
Life cycle design includes:

Con:
Humane Design:
Humane is emphasis on liberal value i.e. respect for other
views. Humane design is concerned with the comfortable of
all elements of the global ecosystem including plants and
wildlife.
Humane design is deeply rooted in the need to preserve the
chain elements of the ecosystems that human survival.
Humane design includes:
Preservation of natural conditions.
Design for human comfort.
Urban design and site planning.

Need for Sustainable Architecture:

Architecture is an essential arena/place
innovation.

for sustainable

Our buildings or homes are one of the most important assets

of our lives.
Our world needs help gaining popularity on that list. With the
help of sustainable architecture, a Green design
successfully meld beauty and functionality together to save
our planet from us. The need for sustainable architecture is:
Low cost of materials,
Low energy and transportation costs,
Thermal mass for natural heating by the sun,
It maintains a balanced indoor climate without extremes
of temperature,
A renewable non-toxic resource which can be readily
recycled,

Benefits of Sustainable Architecture:

The benefits of sustainable architecture is very board while
its application. The benefits of sustainable architecture can
be divided into three main sections:
Environmental Benefits:
It promote and protect ecosystem,
It improve the quality of surroundings environment in
air and water,
It can reduce solid waste and conserve the natural
resources.
Economic:
It reduce utility bills/operating costs,
It

will

provide

higher

employee

satisfaction

and

productivity,
Higher probability of selling the buildings/investment.

How to Achieve Sustainable Architecture:

There are number of ways to achieve sustainable architecture
as per the
Location,
Environment,
Climatic Condition,
Human living style, activities and much more.
Most following ways to achieve sustainable architecture are;Energy Efficiency:
It is the use of energy in efficient manner while construction of the
buildings.
The energy efficiency includes:
a. Small is good
b. Passive solar design
c. Active solar design
d. High levels of insulations
e. Thermal mass

How to Achieve Sustainable Architecture:

Waste management:
The good living condition of the building is mostly depends
up on waste management.
The waste management includes:
a. Through designing in modules,
b. Recycling while building,
c. Grey water system,
d. Low flow taps and showers
Selection of Building Materials:
The architectural sustainability is of a building mostly
depends up on the correct selection of materials.
The building materials selection will be
a.

Use of renewable, non-toxic materials,

b.

Use of recyclable/Recycled materials,

c.

Use of locally available materials to reduce transport.
