Ottoman

Empire
Murad IV
By: Merve I.

Murad IV(1612-1640)
Murad IV ruled from 1623 - 1640, he was the 17th Sultan, and died when
he was 27 from cirrhosis.
He ascended the throne when he was 11 years, after his uncle(Mad
Mustafa) was dethroned because he was having mental problems.
Murad IV was for a long time under the control of his relatives and
during his early years as Sultan, his mother, Ksem Sultan, essentially
ruled through him. At this time there was internal disturbance in the
Empire.

People did not respect him because he was a small Sultan, so this lead
him to have a tough temperament. He is also physically strong.

He brought the empire to a proper order by controlling bribery and

patronage. He banned any types of alcohol, tobacco and coffee(the
reason for this was because the big fire in Istanbul in 1631 was because of
the janissaries who drank alcohol and tobacco). He would give heavy
punishments to whom than broke this ban. He would patrol the streets in
civilian clothes at night, and if he saw anyone breaking his ban, he would

Murat IV s reign is most capable for the Ottoman-Safavid War, which is because the
outcome would permanently part the Caucasus between the two Empires for around 2
centuries, and it also roughly laid the foundation for the current Turkey-Iraq-Iran borders.

Ottoman forces managed to conquer Azerbaijan, by occupying Tabriz, Hamadan, and

capturing Baghdad(1638).
Murad IV himself commanded the invasion of Mesopotamia and proved to be an
outstanding field commander.

With the Treaty of Zuhab which followed after the war, it roughly comprised and
confirmed the borders as per the Peace of Amasya, with Eastern Armenia, Eastern
Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Dagestan staying Persian, while Western Armenia, and
Western Georgia staying Ottoman.
Mesopotamia was irrevocably lost for the Persians. The borders per the outcome
of the war is more or less the present border line between Turkey - Iraq and Iran.

The Economy of the Ottoman Empire(picture on next slide)

The Ottoman Empire was based on the Timar System.
According to this system, the government does not pay any salary to
some of their officers and soldiers, instead they give the incomes of a
land.
The villagers who own the land give their tax to the timar owner
instead of the government.
The owners of the timar use this taxes, according to the lands tax
income, and they raise mounted troops called Timarli Sipahi.
Besides being a military system, it is also an official system.
The Ottomans thoughts were against import, they believed that every area
in the Empire should be able to maintain their needs themselves, instead of
buying from the other empires.(especially food)

About The Ottoman Empire(picture on next slide)

The women of the palace were living in a place called Harem where no
men could enter except for the Sultans family.(because women were their
property and privacy)
The helpers that served the Harem were firstly highly educated in the
palace.
The Janissaries, who were basically the soldiers, were taken from nonmuslim families(who had more than one child) and educated in the palace
since they were small.
The Janissaries were not allowed to get married(for them to be more loyal
to their empire).
In choosing the Janissaries there were some specific rules such as:
There must be at least 40 houses between the families of the children
