Airport Accident Statistics

According to Learmount (2005), the distribution of ramp
accidents statistics is as follows: 43% gate stop area; 39%
gate entry and exist area; and 18% ramp outside of gate entry
area.
About 243,000 people are injured each year in these
accidents and incidents; the injury rate is 9 per 1,000
departures.
Ramp accidents cost major airlines worldwide at least US$10
billion a year, the data indicates. These accidents affect
airport operations, result in personnel injuries, and damage
aircraft, facilities and ground-support equipment.

Air Accidents Investigation Branch

(AAIB)
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch investigates civil aircraft
accidents and serious incidents within the UK, its overseas territories
and crown dependencies.
Their purpose is to improve aviation safety globally by determining the
causes of air accidents and serious incidents, and making safety
recommendations intended to prevent recurrence. It is not to
apportion blame or liability.
They improve aviation safety in general through education and sharing
the lessons learnt from accident investigations
They treat the survivors and relatives of air accident victims
sympathetically, helping them understand what happened and whats
being done to prevent future accidents
