Environmental Impact

Assessment (EIA)of
Hydropower Project

Introduction

Formal process to predict the environmental impact of developmental

activities.

Planning of appropriate adverse effect and improve positive effect.

To identify ,predict and communicate information about environment

effect of a proposal.

Project Description

Location : salakhu khola, Nuwakot

Type : mini hydropower project

1.

Capacity :2.816 mw

2.

Head : 142.559 m

3.

Turbine : pelton(2 unit)

. Estimated
. Payback

cost: Rs. 4 billion

period : 3.15 years

Environment conservation

Leave water downstream for village use.

Creation of sanitary environment among workers.

Proper management of aquatic life.

Management of construction material shouldnt degrade environment.

Sustainable Development

Management of job to workers who lost their job due to construction of

hydropower plant.

Access of job to local people.

River training work for safety of local people.

EXISTING ENVIRONMENT
CONDITIONS

Heavy afforested region with light settlement.

Necessity of river training work for village people.

Downstream water needed for irrigation purpose.

Construction Materials

Should be eco friendly managed

Large rocks shouldnt be carelessly degraded to prevent landslide.

Trees shouldnt be randomly cut for wood.

Waste materials shouldnt be just thrown without treatment.

Impact on physical environment

Landslide and soil erosion

Air and noise pollution

Water pollution

Waste disposal and its impacts

Impact due to stockpiling of materials

Land use impact

Change in water quality due to reduced flow

Impact on micro-climate

Impact on socio-economic and cultural environment

Impact of land acquisition (use of land)

Potential decrease in agriculture production

Anti-social behavior (local violence )

Impact on health and sanitation

Law and order

Inflation of market price

Movement of people in dangerous places

Impact on biological environment

Impact on forest/vegetation (deforestation)

Impact on fauna( Increased hunting and reducing the moment of mammals)

Impact on fish (Moreover Aquatic Life)

MITIGATION MEASURES

Installation of pollution controlling devices.

Public awareness programs.

Plantation of trees in nearby location.

Construction material should be taken in organized way without

causing environmental degradation.

Waste should be deposited in landfill site.

Sufficient water should be discharged downstream.

Governmental monitoring

Time and again monitoring.

Proper evaluation and observation.

Strict rules to avoid violation of environment.

Proper policy and adequate planning.

Adverse Impacts

Construction stage

landscape disturbance, decline in air quality due to dust, emissions of

gases in construction activities, impact on height of ground water
table, noise pollution, management of solid waste generated by
construction workers, traffic management, drinking water supply

Operation and Maintenance stage

Decline in ground water table, impact on health and security of

worker, management of surface drainage. Similarly, there is
permanent loss of open land.

CONCLUSION AND
RECOMMENDATION

ENVIRONMENT IS VITAL TO ALL, THUS MUST BE PRESERVED.

DIFFERENT WAYS AND MEANS SHOULD BE ADOPTED TO REDUCE

ADVERSE IMPACT.

PROJECT SHOULD SUIT LOCAL ENVIRONMENT.

FINAL SITUATION OF ENVIRONMENT SHOULD BE PREDICTED BEFORE

INITIATION OF PROJECT.
