What do we need to be able to

have/use these things?

Topic: The Human Footprint

The Big Question:

WHAT are our energy sources and how does
the use of these resources affect our
economy and planet?

Natural resources

Why do we need natural resources?

Energy = ability to do work.
Energy is needed to power cars and
factories, heat schools and homes,
refine metals, and make many of the
things we take for granted.

What is your definition of a natural resource?

Natural resource: Any substance/element
that comes from nature that can be used
to live.

Box 2:

WRITE

5!

Make a list of
some natural resources you can think of.
water gold trees
fish
animals plants
copper lead zinc
iron ore soil
wind
sun salt fruits

Box 3:
what is the benefit of having an abundance
of natural resources?
self-reliance
trade

Box 4:
what are challenges to not having
natural resources?

dependence
on other countries
not able to trade

Higher Order Question:

How would political
tensions affect other
countries who depend
on oil in the Middle
East?

Renewable Resources
Definition:
a natural resource which can replenish with the
passage of time
Examples:
Corn/Plants Corn
Air/Wind
Solar
Hydropower (Waves/Tides)
Geothermal (heat from the Earth)
Biomass (aka garbage. Some of it is just stuff lying
around -- dead trees, tree branches, yard
clippings, left-over crops, wood chips)

Non-Renewable Resources
Definition:
took millions of years to form, and will run
out one day
Examples:
Coal
Fossil Fuel Oil
Nuclear
Natural Gas

Pros/Cons for Non-Renewable

Energy
The good thing is about fossil fuels is:
-Less expensive to produce
-Provides 95% of total energy needs
The bad thing about fossil fuels is:
-Pollution
-Dependent on other countries for resources
(oil)
-We will run out eventually

HOW ARE OIL AND GAS

MADE ???

HOW IS COAL MADE ???

Pros/Cons for Renewable Energy

The good thing is:

dont run out
do not pollute the environment (debatable)
can be converted to electricity, which is stored
and transported to our homes for use

The bad thing is:

Expensive technology
Some argue it does pollute the environment
Rely on irregular conditions (sunlight, wind etc.)
