Rocksound

A pug has been used to advertise free posters. Teenagers are

usually interested in having posters of bands they like so will
therefore be more likely to buy this magazine for the free poster.
Most people enjoy giveaways and this is a useful thing for a
magazine to do in order to have more buyers. This is an example
of how the image as used mode of address. They recognised that
teenagers are interested in posters so by including these, they
have communicated effectively with their audience.

The coverlines are names of

bands and artists in the rock
industry who are featured in the
magazine. However, no
information is given about them
which makes the audience
more likely to read the
magazine to find out
information about them. The
colour palette/scheme is
consistent which is blue, red
and yellow. These colours make
the magazine brighter and
oppose the dark colours worn in
the main image. The use of
these colours also appeals to
the young target audience . The
colours dont denote formality
and neatness which is
commonly used on magazines
for adults. The older generation
and the middle aged parts of
society will not be familiar with
the bands and artists named in
the coverlines. Therefore, the
coverlines are effective for the
target audience.

The barcode is a way in

which the magazine
follows codes and
conventions. This barcode
has been placed here
simply to be scanned
quickly when brought.

The rule of thirds has been used

effectively on this front cover. All of
the band members faces are placed in
a hotspot which makes the audience
look a them first when they read this
magazine. Secondly, the hotspots
toward the bottom of the page are
placed where the name of the band is.
This has been done so the audience
can identify the people in the image
with the band name. The three
members of Against the Current are
in each on of the thirds on the page
making the image adequately spaced.

The main coverline on this front cover,

addresses the content that will be on
the double page spread. It identifies
the name of the band in the main
image and labels them the hottest
band on warped. The target audience
will be able to identify what this means
and can read the magazine to
understand the reasoning for it. The
phrase hottest band is a pull quote
which makes the audience intrigued
towards reading more about the band.
The red and blue colours used keep the
colour palette consistent and prevents
making the front cover looking messy.

The genre of this magazine is music and the sub-genre is rock. This
is supported through the coverlines which name bands and artists in
the rock industry. Also, the Mise en Scene supports the sub-genre as
the band in the main image are wearing black clothing which is
stereotypically associated with people in the genre of rock.
The Mise en Scene follows the rule of thirds, a masthead at the top
of the page and a clear main image. The coverlines are also a key
part in the Mise en Scene.
The colour scheme has no male or female connotations which makes
the target audience wider. It also means that the audience will be
young/teenagers as the colours are bright and denote no formality.
This represents the target audience to be informal and disorderly
and gives a negative denotation.
The text used is different sizes and fonts which makes the look of
the front cover casual. This is beneficial to the magazine as it again
appeals to the target audience who will not focus on the appearance
and decorum of the text. Further to this, it represents the target
audience to be unorganised and thoughtless which is a negative
Targetof
audience:
representation
younger people.
Age: 15-25
Gender: Male and Female
Social Class: Likely to be working class
Occupation: Low paid job (C2,D,E)
Education: A Student
The individual likely to be interested in this
magazine will stereotypically be young as the
bands wont be known by the older generation
or the middle aged. Younger people do not
have highly paid jobs are a likely to be in
education.

The band on the front cover are a known icon in the rock industry.
This will appeal to the target audience who will be more intrigued by
the magazine.
The masthead is in bold writing near the top of the page which
follows the codes and conventions of typical magazines. However,
the grey colouring of the masthead makes it less visible than the
other text on the front cover. Rocksound has chosen to do this
because the title of their magazine is less important than the
context in the magazine which is briefed in the coverlines.
The main image is a long shot of a rock band who are using direct
address. An audience can identify that they are part of a rock band
because of the masthead and the coverlines but also the Mise en
Scene of the main image. The clothing is black which is worn by
people involved in the rock genre. The use of direct makes the
people look more confident and someone to aspire to which is the
magazines purposeful mode of address.
Target audience:
Age: 15-25
Gender: Male and Female
Social Class: Likely to be working class
Occupation: Low paid job (C2,D,E)
Education: A Student
The individual likely to be interested in this
magazine will stereotypically be young as the
bands wont be known by the older generation
or the middle aged. Younger people do not
have highly paid jobs are a likely to be in
education.

3 images of double page spreads have been placed on the

contents page which have lines connecting them to the
text on the left so the audience can identify the image
with the page number. The images all contain Mid-shots so
the audience ca see facial expressions and body language.
The images do not contain any females because
stereotypically, rock bands consist of just men. Both males
and females listen to bands containing just men. The
individuals on the images look content and relaxed which
represents people associated with the genre of rock as laid
back. The clothing worn is dark which fits the sub-genre
as people associated with rock stereotypically wear darker
clothing. The images have borders around them to
separate them from the text.
The font stays the same in the text so it is easier to read
and doesn't look inconsistent or informal.
The date and issue number has not been placed on the
contents page as the issue number is on the front cover of
the magazine and doesnt need to be repeated.
There is no masthead as the contents page is clearly
presented as a contents page however it would be useful if
a masthead would have ben used.
The content is based around the sub-genre to interest the
audience.

The colour palette has stayed mostly consistent through the

use of the colour red but no blue or yellow has been used.
The black and white makes the contents page easy to read
and keeps the text formal and organised. Red has been used
for the subheadings and page numbers so they are easier to
define and read.
The use of space has been used sufficiently. The text is placed
on the left and the images are on the right (page split).
Nothing is overlapping and everything is clear to see.
Rhetorical questions are asked on the contents page. This use
of mode of address intrigues the target audience to read the
articles. Direct address has been used with the words you
and the inclusive word we to make the audience feel some
kind of inclusion.

The main image(long shot) covers the whole page and the text overlaps. The text is on the left
and right and the image is in the centre of the page. This makes the use of space sufficient and
everything is clear to see and read. The clothing worn in the main image is the same attire as
the one on the front cover.
The columns have the same width which prevents the double page spread from looking messy.
They contain text which is the same size and font which again prevents it from looking messy.
The colour scheme has remained the same to keep the target audience the same.

Page numbers are placed in the bottom corners of

the pages so the audience can identify where they
are in the magazine so they can refer to the page at
a later date.
The drop cap is used to start the article off. It
follows the codes and conventions of similar music
magazines.
The quotation were not trying to fit in were just
against the current captions the main image and
is a sort or play on joke. The band are advertising
themselves through phrasing themselves into a
short caption.
The mode of address is the same as the front cover
and contents page. The language is factual and
does not contain slang.
