Education
• Education in the largest
sense is any act or
experience that has a
formative effect on the
mind, character or physical
ability of an individual. In its
technical sense, education
is the process by which
society deliberately
transmits its accumulated
knowledge, skills and values
from one generation to
another.
Act On Right to Education
• A right to education has been created and
recognized by some jurisdictions: since 1952,
Article 2 of the first Protocol to the European
Convention on Human Rights obliges all
signatory parties to guarantee the right to
education. At world level, the United Nations'
International Covenant on Economic, Social
and Cultural Rights of 1966 guarantees this
right under its Article 13.
Traditional Methods of Teaching
• Teachers need to understand a subject enough
to convey its essence to students. While
traditionally this has involved lecturing on the
part of the teacher, new instructional
strategies such as team-based learning put the
teacher more into the role of course designer,
discussion facilitator, and coach and the
student more into the role of active learner,
discovering the subject of the course.
What is Learning
• Is a relatively
permanent change in
behaviour that comes
about as a result of a
planned experience
Results from the
interaction between
what we already know,
new information we
encounter, and what we
do as we learn
Concept of Teaching
• Teaching is a
series of planned
experiences which
brings about a
relatively
permanent
change in
behaviour in
learners
Traditional Teaching is
Monotonous can lead too ???
Issues facing the System
• The Productivity
Squeeze: “Cheaper,
Faster, Better”
• Fallacy: That we can
use Less resources To
train more students
and/or conduct more
programs and To
produce more productive
workers and/or get better
results
Education is Changing from Socratic
Methods to Cyber Learning
Internet Changes the World
• The internet is
computer based global
information system. It is
composed of many
interconnected
computer networks.
Each network may link
thousands of computers
enabling them to share
information
All are One with Internet
• The internet has
brought a
transformation in many
aspects of life. It is one
of the biggest
contributors in making
the world into a global
village
Knowledge with Touch of Button
• The access to
information being one
of the most important.
Student can now have
access to libraries
around the world.
Now at the touch of a
button students have a
huge database in front
of them
Technology is supported by Online
Education
• Technology is an
increasingly influential
factor in education.
Computers and mobile
phones are used in
developed countries
both to complement
established education
practices and develop
new ways of learning
such as online
education
Computers Empower Education
• The
proliferation of
computers also
means the
increase of
programming
and blogging.
e-Learning An Emerging methodology
in Teaching and Training
• E-education (also known as e-learning
and online education) is the process of
learning where computers are used at each
possible step of the process: enrolment,
instruction design, content delivery,
evaluation, assessment and support. This
mean that students and teachers do not have
to sit in the classroom but instead they learn
from anywhere in the world and in any time.
Technology a boon to Education
• Technology offers
powerful learning tools
that demand new skills
and understandings of
students, including
Multimedia, and
provides new ways to
engage students, such
as Virtual learning
environments.
Multimedia is Media and content
• Multimedia is media
and content that uses a
combination of different
content forms. having
multiple content forms.
The term is used in
contrast to media which
only use traditional
forms of printed or
hand-produced
material.
Multimedia has several
combination of Technologies
• Multimedia
includes a
combination of
text, audio, still
images,
animation, video,
and interactivity
content forms.
Technology helps teaching and
assessment of students
• The use of technologies
such as PowerPoint and
interactive whiteboard
is capturing the
attention of students in
the classroom.
Technology is also being
used in the assessment
of students
Power Point Configuration
PowerPoint Contains
• PowerPoint
presentations consist of
a number of individual
pages or "slides". The
"slide" analogy is a
reference to the slide
projector, Slides may
contain text, graphics,
movies, and other
objects, which may be
arranged freely on the
slide
Multimedia Learning
• learning with
multimedia the brain
must simultaneously
encode two different
types of information, an
auditory stimulus and a
visual stimulus. One
might expect that these
competing sources of
information would tend
to overwhelm or
overload the learner
Listening and Viewing have
greater impact on Learning
• Psychological
research has
shown that verbal
information is in
fact better
remembered
when
accompanied by a
visual image.
Working memory increases with
Audiovisual Impact
• Baddeley and Hitch
proposed a theory of
working memory in
1974 which has two
largely independent
subcomponents that
tend to work in
parallel - one visual
and one
verbal/acoustic.
Audience Response System helps in
Instantesous Responses in Learning
• The Audience Response
System (ARS), which allows
immediate feedback tests
and classroom discussions.
• Each person has a remote
control with which
selections can be made.
Each remote communicates
with a computer via
receivers located around
the room or via a single
receiver connected to the
presenter's computer using
a USB connector.
Spatial Contiguity Principle
• Spatial Contiguity
Principle - "Students
learn better when
corresponding words
and pictures are
presented near rather
than far from each
other on the page or
Screen
Temporal Contiguity Principle-
Temporal Contiguity
Principle-"Students
learn better when
corresponding words
and pictures are
presented
simultaneously rather
than successively
Coherence Principle
• Coherence Principle - "Students learn better
when extraneous material is excluded rather
than included.]
Principle- "Design effects are stronger for low-
knowledge learners than for high knowledge
learners, and for high-spatial learners rather
than for low-spatial learners
Technology based Patient care
areas
• Classroom of the Future
featured the usual HMS
classroom technology,
including a Web-
enabled display
monitor, along with a
hospital bed and patient
simulator placed
alongside a tutorial
conference table and
chairs…”
Information Technology enriches
Hospital Services
• Ensuring that System
remains conducive
despite diminishing
resources and IT “take-
over
• Understanding the
motivation and needs of
each group and
generation of learners
Diverse Programs created to suit
the Learners
• Virtual classrooms
that can be accessed
from anywhere Well
educated,
professional
instructors just like
traditional education
Diverse programs in
a variety of
disciplines
Why Medical teachers need
e-Teaching Methods ???
• Modern children are
ready for e-education,
and that e-learning is a
good opportunity for a
meaningful after-school
activity for them and
can become a popular
form of after-school
activity among children
and their parents
Why Students Switching to
Internet
• Flexibility is one of the
most attractive
elements of online
learning, but the
benefits don't stop
there. In fact, many
online students find
their educational
journey is particularly
rewarding. Benefits
include:
Technology creates Virtual
Class Rooms:
• Virtual classrooms that
can be accessed from
anywhere Well
educated, professional
instructors just like
traditional education
Diverse programs in a
variety of disciplines
Accredited programs to
complete college
degrees
Real Time Training
• Technical programs that
provide real-time
training Freedom to
enhance skills –and
resume – while still
working full-time Real-
life application of
classroom materials
Greater comfort with
interactive technologies
Work/life balance
On line Education is fast growing

Podcasting in Medicine
• According to Wikipedia,
podcasting is a "method of
publishing audio
broadcasts via the
Internet." In layman's
terms, it's a way for
individuals and companies
to create audio programs
and allow people to
download, listen, and
subscribe to them very
easily
Podcasting Concept
IPods a Boon to Medical Profession
• People think of iPods,
they think of
downloaded music or
maybe videos. They
think of fun. However,
iPods are finding their
way to work in other
industries as well. One
example of this is the
service and health
industries
iPods in Medical Profession
• iPods are perfect for
this. With a small,
compact size and easy
to use formatting, they
are perfect for on the
go information sharing.
They can store amazing
amounts of information
and share it easily. They
are also easy to use and
do not require much
training to run
IPod in Patient care
• Hospitals in Europe and
Australia are using iPods
to train new
employees.. Or they can
use iPods to train
employees on new
issues such as what to
do in a quarantine
situation or how to
handle a violent patient.
Medical students empowered with
iPods
• Medical students are
starting to use iPods for
classes as well. Teachers
can use programs to put
lecture materials into a
flash format, allowing
them to be viewed on
an iPod instead of on
regular slides in the
lecture hall.
Podcasts helps in critical learning
in Diagnosis of Heart Murmurs
• Michael Barrett, a
cardiologist and
professor at Temple
University School of
Medicine in
Philadelphia, created
sound files of four types
of computer-generated
heart murmurs
We listen to the Murmurs and can
Perfect the Practice
• Heart murmurs
are converted to
MP3 format that
his students
could download
and listen to on
their iPods
Heart Sounds in IPod
• Students who used his
"Heart Songs" on average
exercised 90% accuracy
rates in detecting murmurs,
compared with 20% to 30%
accuracy rates of most
medical students and
residents. The American
College of Cardiology has
made Barrett's "Heart
Songs" MP3s available
online for download.
Patients too learn through
Podcasts
• Grayson Wheatley, a
cardiovascular surgeon
at the Arizona Heart
Institute and Hospital in
Phoenix, began creating
audio podcasts to help
patients better
understand complex
medical issues.
Subscribe to Medical Podcasts
• The Arizona Heart Institute
and Hospital launched the
Cardiovascular Multimedia
Information Network, which
hosts an online library of
past podcasts for patients
and physicians that can be
downloaded at no cost. In
addition, some medical
journals, as the Journal of
the American Medical
Association, Lancet, BMJ
now offer audio podcasts.
Podcasts for Learning and Teaching
