ENVIS

ENVIS

Stands for Environment Information System.

Realising the importance of Environmental
Information, the Government of India, in December,
1982, established an Environmental Information
System (ENVIS) as a plan programme.

ROLE of ENVIS

Formulating environmental management policies and decision making process

aiming at environmental protection and improvement of environment for
sustaining good quality of life for the living beings.

Maintaining balance between the demands and resources available for

keeping the environmental quality at a satisfactory level.

To build up a repository and dissemination Centre in environmental science

and engineering.

To gear up state-of-art technologies of information acquisition, processing,

storage, retrieval and dissemination of environmental nature.

To support and promote research,

environmental information technology.

ENVIS network at present consists of a chain of 69 network partners out of

which 40 are on subject-specific and 29 on State/UT related issues.

Role of Quantum GIS(QGIS)

QGIS is a cross-platform free and open-source desktop geographic

information system (GIS) application that provides data viewing, editing, and
analysis.

QGIS allows users to create maps with many layers using different map
projections. Maps can be assembled in different formats and for different
uses

Autodesk building information Modeling

(BIM)

Building Information Modeling(BIM) is an intelligent 3Dmodel-based process

that equips architecture, engineering, and construction professionals with the
insight and tools to more efficiently plan, design, construct, and manage
buildings and infrastructure.

Reduce waste in construction projects with tools that help contractors and
subcontractors improve construction planning, produce results faster, and
finish projects on budget to increase profit margins

C-FACT

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has called for

industrialized countries to reduce GHG emissions by 85% by the year 2050 to
help stabilize the climate.

C-FACT (Corporate Finance Approach to Climate-Stabilizing Targets)

methodology is a business- and environmentally-friendly model to help
companies set targets for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions, by
allowing them to:

1.

Align corporate GHG emissions reduction targets with the IPCC goal

2.

Adjust for a companys relative contribution to global GDP (gross domestic

product)

3.

Annually recalculate targets based on the previous years performance

C-FACT for Cities helps cities set scientific and economic-based targets for
measuring and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

What is Life Cycle Assessment?

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a tool for the systematic evaluation of the
environmental aspects of a product or service system through all stages of its life
cycle

LCA provides an adequate instrument for environmental decision support

Reliable LCA performance is crucial to achieve a life-cycle economy

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), a world-wide federation of

national standards bodies, has standardized this framework within the series ISO
14040 on LCA

Phases of Life Cycle Assessment

Goal and Scope Definition, the product(s) or service(s) to be assessed are defined,
a functional basis for comparison is chosen and the required level of detail is
defined

Inventory Analysis of extractions and emissions, the energy and raw materials
used, and emissions to the atmosphere, water and land, are quantified for each
process, then combined in the process flow chart and related to the functional
basis

Impact Assessment, the effects of the resource use and emissions generated are
grouped and quantified into a limited number of impact categories which may then
be weighted for importance

Interpretation, the results are reported in the most informative way possible and
the need and opportunities to reduce the impact of the product(s) or service(s) on
the environment are systematically evaluated

Bioinformatics

As an interdisciplinary field of science, bioinformatics combines computer

science, statistics, mathematics, and engineering to analyze and interpret
biological data.
