Hi, my name is Chauncey Clayton

and my proposal is to decrease the
dark figure of crime in the
communities that we live in.

What is the Problem?

The Problem is the community is becoming a dangerous
place for families and the people who call it home.

How is this affecting the

community?
The community is losing its
- Trust
- Safety
- Feeling of home
Overall its aspect of being a place someone calls
home!

Why should communities

leaders be concerned?
Community leader: a person who represents the
community.
Leadership: guide/lead individuals.
Take control of their community, listen to the problems
of the communities and do something about it!!

Why should communities

leaders be concerned?
- To keep their people protected.
- Keep legitimacy: have the peoples respect
- Good reputation, protect ones reputation as a political
leader among the community.

The Dark Figure of Crime:

Dark figure of crime : Crime that hasnt been reported.
Examples
- Abuse
- Theft
- Assault
- Rape

How do we come up with this

crime rate if its not reported?
The Dark figure of crime are measured through Uniform
Crime Reports and National Crime Victimization survey.
Both surveys are the official ways to measure crime.
-UCR: The statistics and data on crime.
-NCVS: Surveys given twice a year to almost 80,000
households in the U.S.

Purpose of the Surveys

The UCR: This is not a survey but a record of the data and
makes it into a statistic.
THe NCVS: This is a survey given to people and ask them
questions of victimization. For instance, have you been
raped in the past 12 months?

Why is the dark figure a

problem?
- Crime is going on without being handled.
- People in the community are living in fear.
- Crimes arent being reported.

Law enforcement
City hall
Leaders within the community

Solution : What to do to fix

this?
- Neighborhood Watch (National Crime Prevention
Program).
- National Sheriff Association (Interaction with police).
These programs will sponsor neighborhood
watch.
Gain legitimacy

Impact

Safer place for the families and kids

Police and community relationship
Leaders maintain legitimacy
Crime is reduced
