PROPOSED TOPOGRAPHIC

SURVEY OF PANAL RIVER AT

TAYSAN RESETTLEMENT
SECTION

Background
Floods are one of the most common hazards in
Albay and it kills millions of people as what typhoon
Reming did to Albayanos in 2006. TheEuropean
Union(EU)Floods Directivedefines flood as a
covering by waterof land not normally covered by
water. Flooding may occur as an overflow of water
from water bodies, such as ariverorlake, in which
the water overtops or breakslevees, resulting in
some of that water escaping its usual boundaries.
Floods can also occur in rivers when the flow rate
exceeds the capacity of theriver channel,
particularly at bends or meanders in the waterway.

Floods often cause loss of lives, damage to buildings and other

structures especially when they are in the natural flood plains
of rivers like that in Taysan Resettlement Legazpi City.
Residents in this place have traditionally lived and worked by
the Panal River because the land is flat, fertileand because it
provides easy travel and access tocommerceand industry.
But during heavy rains or when the place is visited by
typhoons Panal River overflows and causes flooding along
Taysan Resettlement area. It has been one of the most
devastating natural disasters that the residents have been
experiencing for the past decades. Floods not only damaged
property and endanger lives of humans and animals, but have
other effects as well. Rapid runoff causes soil erosion as well
as sediment deposition problems downstream. Spawning
grounds for fish and other wildlife habitat are often destroyed.
Floods also interfere with drainage and economic use of lands.

Floods can be overcome by building structures such as

constructing new drainage facilities to help tackle the
flooding problem. Another structure that helps prevent
floods is the so slope protection structures. Slope
protection structures help to stabilize the slope and can
last a lifetime in protecting surrounding properties from
damage and people from injury if they are maintained
in a good and functional condition at all times. The data
needed to be able to construct a Slope Protection
structure includes the actual elevation and cross
section of the river. After the collection of the required
data and the topography of the place, it is all set to
construct a Slope Protection Structure.

Objectives

The primary aim of the proposal is to prepare a

topographic map for the Panal River along Taysan
Resettlement, Legazpi City section as preliminary data
for the design of a slope protection construction. It also
includes the following objectives:
1.
To know the actual cross-section of the river per
station
2.
To know the elevation of cross-section per station?
3.
To plot the center line profile of the river
4.
To determine the areas prone to floods and
erosions
5.
To help the community against flood and other
flood-related damages

Scope and Limitation

This project focuses on the survey of

topography of the Panal River 800 meter
long along Taysan Resettlement, Legazpi
City. The project is not to construct a slope
protection structure but to collect the
preliminary data needed in constructing
slope protection structure in that particular
place. This includes the actual elevation of
the river and its cross section. The scope
will be within the periphery of the study.

Conclusion

Based from the study, it was concluded that in order to prepare a

topographic map of a river the researcher must collect preliminary
data needed in constructing a slope protection structure in that
particular place. First, know the actual cross section of the river
together with the elevation of cross section at every station. And also
it is needed to determine the centerline profile of the river and with
that we will be able to identify the areas that are prone to floods.
Gathered data must be analyzed and interpreted. Cost of the project
must be given importance.
It was concluded that before conducting a survey of a river in a
particular area, one must consider the place, its demographic profile
and history on floods. The effect of the project to residences, to the
municipality and to the environment in general must also be given
importance.
Lastly, it was concluded that the proposed topographic survey of the
river will be advantageous to the community in protecting lives and
properties. The project will also give the proper data for designing a
slope protection structure.
