WHAT IS VIBRATION ?
Vibrationis
a mechanical
phenomenon wherebyoscillations
occur about anequilibrium point.
The word comes from
Latinvibrationem("shaking,
brandishing"). The oscillations may
beperiodic, such as the motion of
a pendulumorrandom, such as
the movement of a tire on a gravel
road.
ACTIVITY
Materials required:
An electric bell, a big glass jar, vacuum pump
Procedure:
1. Hang an electric bell inside a jar connected to
a vacuum pump
2. Arrange the electric bell, a glass bell jar, a
vacuum pump , a battery and a switch as shown
in the diagram
3. When pressing the switch closes the circuit,
we can hear the bell ringing, also that the
hammer is striking the gong of the bell
. 4.
VIBRATION OF AN OBJECT IS A
NECESSARY EVIL
. Thus vibration of a particle is the necessary
condition to produce sound.
A rapid back and forth motion of a particle
about its mean position is known as
vibration.
When we speak, our vocal cord is under
vibration.
When a bell is struck, the bell is under
vibration.
Similarly, when a guitar is played, its strings
are disturbed and they produce vibrations in
the instrument
