ELEMENTS,

COMPOUNDS
AND MIXTURES
WHAT IS ELEMENT?
• It is made up of ONE TYPE OF ATOM only.
• Cannot be broken down into simpler substances
• Example :

Oxygen Helium Silver Gold Hydrogen

WHAT IS COMPOUND?
• Is formed when two or more elements combined
CHEMICALLY…
• The ratio of element in compound are fixed
• Example:

• Water Ammonia Salt (NaCl) Carbon dioxide

WHAT IS MIXTURES?
• Made up from two or more element or
compound
• Can be separated Physically
• Example :

• Air soil seawater petrolium

EXPERIMENT TIME
• Aim: To show the differences between
compounds and mixtures
• Hypothesis : Compounds and mixtures are differ
in their:
1. Physical properties
2. Separation method
3. Reaction with acid
STEPS
1. A mixture was prepared by mixing two spatula of iron
filings and two spatula of sulphur powder.
2. A compound was prepared by heating strongly the
mixtures (iron filings and sulphur powder)
3. The heating was stopped as soon as the mixture begin to
glow
4. Testing
a. observe the mixtures using a magnifying glass
b. using a magnet
c. using test tube
Can you identify the original colour of iron filing and sulphur powder?
Does the color of the substances remain the same after heating?
1st observation : Magnifying glass
Iron filings and sulphur powder can be seen in their original state before
heating process. Why?
Can the iron filings and sulphur powder be separated using bar magnet:
a) before heating?
b) After heating?

2nd observation: Bar Magnet

iron filings can be separated from the mixture of sulphur powder and iron filings
using a bar magnet. After they are heated, they become a new subtance which is
called a compound. This new substance cannot be separated by a magnet. Why is it
so?

Why iron filings and sulphur powder can be separated in water?

Can carbon disulphate dissolve sulphur powder before and after heating process?
