Polypropylene (PP)
Versatile polymer
Serves double duty, Plastic and Fiber
As a plastic used for Dishwasher-safe food containers
Doesn't melt below 160C or 320F
As a fiber, polypropylene is used to make indoor-outdoor
carpeting
Easy to colored, doesn't absorb water like nylon

What is PP

What is PP

Made with different

tactiicities
Mostly used ; Isotactic
Sometimes Atactic

Properties
Mechanical properties:
Density between 0.895 and 0.92 g/cm.
Youngs modulus between 1300 and 1800 N/mm.
Lowest density, Light weight.
Normally tough and flexible (when copolymerized with

ethylene).
Used as an engineering plastic.
Reasonably economical.
Good resistance to fatigue

Properties
Thermal properties:
Melting point 171C (340F).
Commercial isotactic PP, melting point 160C to 166C (320
to 331F).
Syndiotactic PP (Crystallinity 30%), melting point 130C
(266F).

Properties
Chemical Properties:
Resistant to fats and almost all organic solvents (At room
temperature)
Apart from strong oxidants
Non-oxidizing acids and bases stored in PP containers
Solved in of low polarity solvents
Due to the tertiary carbon atom, chemically less resistant than
PE
Soluble in P-xylene at 140C.

Properties
Degradation:
Liable to chain degradation from exposure to heat and UV
radiation.
Reported to degrade while in human body as implantable
mesh devices.
Degraded material forms a tree bark-like layer at the surface
of mesh fibers.

History
First polymerized propylene in 1951.
Propylene first polymerized to a
crystalline isotactic polymer in 1954.
Commercial production of isotactic
polypropylene from 1957.
Syndiotactic polypropylene was also
first synthesized by Natta and his
coworkers.

PP Fibre Crystallinity
Degree of crystallinity is generally
between 50-65%, (Depend on
processing conditions).
Crystallization occurs between Tg and
Tm .
Crystallization rate is fast at low Temp.
Crystallization rate decreases
with increasing crystallization temp.
with increase of molecular weight

Industrial Processes
Traditionally, three manufacturing processes
Hydrocarbon Slurry or Suspension
Uses a liquid inert hydrocarbon diluent in the reactor
The technology has fallen into disuse
Bulk (or Bulk Slurry)
Uses liquid propylene
Gas Phase
Uses gaseous propylene in contact with the solid

catalyst

Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP):

Polypropylene film extruded and stretched in both the
machine Direction and across machine direction
Increases strength and clarity
Widely used as a packaging material
Easy to coat, print and laminate
Process is called converting
Produced in large rolls

Dope Dye
Also known as Solution Dye/Spun Dye/Mass Dye
Dyeing method used for synthetic fibers /
manufactured fibers

Applications
Used as a dielectric within
certain high-Performance pulse
and low-loss RF capacitors
Manufacturing piping systems
BOPP sheets

Repairing
Very few glues available specifically for gluing PP
Preparation is important
Recommended to clean with mineral spirits or similar
alcohol prior
Melted using a speed welding technique

Health Concerns
Classifies PP as of low to moderate hazard
