Model
A guided practice example through a 7th grade ELA sample lesson on text
structures.

Not all elements are required for every lesson, order of inclusion can be
changed around for a better flow of a lesson.

Standards/ Objectives
What is it?
A summary of the standard that will be addressed and what tasks
students will be able to perform.

Sample Activity: Display the objective on the board. R.I. 7.6

Analyze the structure an author uses to organize a text, including how the major sections contribute to
the whole and to the development of the ideas.

Anticiptory Set
What is it?
Activate prior knowledge and get them interested in the lesson.
Sample Activity
Review a recent article the class has read about about the triangle factory fire.
Ask students to recall what they remember and share it with the class.

Active Participation
What is it?
How will students be involved in the lesson ?
Sample Activity:
Have a Venn Diagram drawn on the board. Have students raise their hands
and suggest two things you could compare and contrast. Write their
individual differences and similarities in the corresponding places as they are
suggested by the students.

Teaching Input
What is it?
What methods will you use to deliver the information to the learners?

Sample Activity: To help students calm down and focus, start with a youtube
video about text structures. Have a hand out of 3 text structure formats and
signal words ( cause and effect, compare and contrast, and chronological).

Modeling
What is it?
How will you show the learner how to apply the information?
Sample Activity: Go over the article about the triangle factory fire. Highlight
for the learners the signal words that indicate has a chronological text
structure.

Check For Understanding

What is it?
How will you allow learners to demonstrate their understanding of important
information from the lesson.
Sample Activity: Ask the students to correctly label a blank version of each
text structure diagram. Ask the students to identify the signal words in a
handout of a compare and contrast article.

Guided Practice
What is it?
What activities will learners perform in class to reinforce learning?
Sample Activity:
Ask the students to identify the signal words in a handout of a compare and
contrast article.

Closure
What is it?
Restate main points and important information from the lesson.
Sample Activity:
Restate the 3 text structures that you learned during the class and ask
students to recall the signal words fo each structure.

Independent Practice
What is it?
Work a learner will perform on their on to reinforce the concepts of the
lesson.
Sample Activity: Hand out a compare and contrast article and ask the
learners to identify the text structure and underline the signal words. This
work can be completed with extra class time or for homework.
