SOCIOLOGY 1
PROF. ORTEGA

What defines family?

Where did the word family come from?

The meaning in English meant something close to household

A group of individuals living under one roof that included blood

relations

Family is defined as a socially recognized group, usually

joined by blood, marriage, or adoption, that forms an
emotional connection and serves as an economic unit of
society in sociology.

What are the reasons of a family?

To provide food and shelter for the children.

To have the family culture in society and allow passage to the

next generation.

To have a sense of protection and belonging.

What are the Aspects of Family

There are many ways that one enters the institution

Where a person is born into the family. (orientation)

Where it is formed through marriage. (procreation)

What are the different types of marriages of a family.

Monogamy: Marriage between a man and a women

Exogamy: Marriage between people from different class or group (interracial)

Endogamy: Marriage between people from the same class or group.

There are also some incident where a man or a women has multiple
partners that they marry.

History of Family and Change

What is considered a traditional family?

In our society, a family if often consisting of a father, a mother,

and at least one children living together in the same household.
Most couple would want to have a child first before saying they
are a complete family. This is also called a nuclear family.

Family can also be considered to extended family that lives

together for many generations.

Some family nowadays are not so traditional because of

many factors.

Same sex parent families

Single parent families

Adopted families

History of Family and Change (Cont.)

There are many families that do not live with each other and live in other
cities or countries. This is because they move away from home and leave
their families behind to start their own family but they are still considered a
part of the main family. Many people now are also in a interracial
relationship, which means that people from a different race are together.

Many married couples with a family do not always last. That is how single
parent family became popular because of divorce. There are many other
factors that cause single parent families

Women have become more independent now and are able to provide for
themselves without a man.

Woman also have a say in the relationship and get to make their own choices
whether to stay with a man or not.

Traditional Family in todays society

Basically between a man and a women, often times they stay together
but in todays world many marriages break apart.

Many traditional families are always changing due to the fact that
divorce is an opinion for the people in the marriage.

Less than half of all 18 year old living in the United States are living in a
household with parents in their first marriage

Less than 20% of children live in a household where the parents are in
their second marriage.

Single Parent Family in todays

society

Many of the single parent family today are mostly single women
and the amount of single women to men are far greater.

There is around 15 million single-parent families and more than

80 percent of them are single women

Single parents are at a disadvantage because of having to take

care of their children's themselves. They face disadvantage in
wealth and education because they do not have enough
resources for their kids.

Children of single parents also tend to face emotional problems

due to the fact that they only have one person to look up too.
The single parent may also look for another significant person
and the their children may or may not like it..

Same Sex Parents in todays society

Study show that there are around 1-10 million children

have at least one parent who is homosexual.

There are many same sex parent who already have a

child of their own due to being married with another
parent and than switching to a same sex partner.

Same sex parents also do as well as heterosexual

parent families because of the fact both are together
and is basically the same as a heterosexual family.

Many people believe that having a same sex parent

can cause emotional harm to the children but many
studies did not see a positive correlation that belief.

Children of the same sex parents are more prone of

getting bullied when they say or when people see their
parents. They are easy discriminated and looked upon.

Functionalist Perspective

Functionalist think that families are important to society and play a big
role in having stability in society. People in families all have an
important role they play in society.

Functionalist see the role a person plays in a family are based on

gender.

They believe that a male should be the one providing financial support
for the family and they do most of the work outside of their home.

While, the women in the family stay inside their home and show the
family emotional support and care of the children.

Conflict Perspective on family

People who have conflict perspective on family tend to think power in a

family is most important.

They tend to see that family benefit men more than women socially.
This allows men to maintain their position in the family.

They think that families work toward social inequality and to maintain
the status quo.

Wealthy families are able to keep their social position for their family
members like children.

Things to improve family

Make laws that offers more benefits for children that have
a single parent, like making more opportunities for
education.

Provide more pay for women who are single parents to

help them take care of their family.

Teach more kids that it is normal and okay to have the

same sex marriage nowadays.

Have classes for parents to further improve their

relationship in the household, so divorce may decrease.

Allow families women to have equal pay as men, so that

women are able to provide for the family as well.
