Assess to Impress!

An inquiry on the use of formative

assessment in order to meet the
needs of the students before,
during, and after a lesson.

By: Kristen Houlihan

Background
I will be completing my final inquiry in the Spring of
2017. I will be in a 2nd grade classroom when I will be
conducting my inquiry. Assessments used to be
something that I viewed as scary or state-mandated,
but my time in the College of Education has showed
me that there are many other types of assessments
that can be done in the classroom. Assessments
became very interesting to me, and that is what I
decided to do my inquiry on.

Purpose
I found, through my internship, that I was great at
giving formative assessments in the beginning and the
end of a lesson. Where I was lacking was fitting
formative assessments in during a lesson. I want to
find formative assessments that are quick and easy to
do, and that also help me to meet the needs of my
students in the most beneficial way. I would also like
to learn about different assessments that I can do
based on subject area.

Wondering
How can I use formative
assessments in order to better
meet the needs of my students
before, during, and after a lesson?
