Project Management Telecom Projects

A Road to Success
Syed Rizvi PMP , ITIL V3 , 6 Sigma

What is a Project ?

A Temporary endeavor undertaken to produce a

unique product or service , with following main
features :

Start and end dates

Clearly defined objectives

Budget & Resource constraints

Temporary Team

Initially defined deliverables

Performed by People

Syed Rizvi PMP , ITIL V3 , 6 Sigma

Why Projects are initiated ?

Projects are initiated either to take advantage of

an opportunity or to solve a problem such as :- In response to a new customer request
- To improve efficiency
- In compliance to a regulatory decision

Syed Rizvi PMP , ITIL V3 , 6 Sigma

What are Telecom Projects ?

Network Transformation from old to new technology

Design, install and configure a network to support a new service or customer

Construction of a new data center, POP or exchange

Laying of optical fiber network for voice , data and video delivery

Installation of enterprise transmission, data , core network

Conceptualize, develop and rollout telecom enterprise or consumer services

Development & integration of latest SDN / NFV and cloud services

Deployment of central Network Operation NOC or call center to improve SLA

Syed Rizvi PMP , ITIL V3 , 6 Sigma

What are Technology Trends ?

Conventional Circuit switching to Packet switching voice

Growth in e-commerce and e-governance

Tremendous demand in high internet speed for mobile and fixed consumer

Huge growth in OTT application minimizing voice revenues for operators

Demand of more and more data storage for customers cloud

Centralize services in cloud making access only a medium of reach

Enterprise services migration towards managed services

Telcos are looking to reduce operational cost by centralizing NOCs

First Call resolution capability building for call centers

Telecom Trends

Syed Rizvi PMP , ITIL V3 , 6 Sigma

What does this mean ?

Mergers will happen since no one has a single platform to meet customer demands

Telco operators will transform themselves in to ICT providers

It will be a crowded market with lots of collaboration to retain customers

Networks will be evolving to deliver multiple services over single link to customer

Managed Single CPE will be used for multiple services

Market will be service oriented rather than Telco loyalty based ( MNP )

Huge transformation, infrastructure and migration projects will be initiated to gain

lead in changing technology trends.

Syed Rizvi PMP , ITIL V3 , 6 Sigma

What are main Project requirements ?

Add value to customer

Complete in time

As per allocated budget

As per agreed quality

With full scope

Syed Rizvi PMP , ITIL V3 , 6 Sigma

How we can achieve this ?

By using Project Management tools
By following Project Management Processes

Syed Rizvi PMP , ITIL V3 , 6 Sigma

Project Management
Project Management is the application , skills,
tools and techniques to project activities to
meet the project requirements.

Problems in Projects Reasons ?

Not Assigning the Right Person to Manage the Project.

Failing to Get Everyone on the Team Behind the Project.

Not Getting Executive Buy-in

Putting Too Many Projects Into Production at Once.

Lack of (Regular) Communication/Meetings

Not Being Specific Enough with the Scope

Allowing the Scope to Frequently Change

Providing Aggressive/Overly Optimistic Timelines

Not Being Flexible

Not Having a System in Place for Approving and Tracking Changes

Not Having a Metric for Defining Success.

Project is balancing competing constraints

Competing Constraints are

Time
Cost
Quality

And one common factor that impact

all above is SCOPE
Large number of projects failed due
to scope changes without control or
no scope clarity we will discuss
only scope Management is rest of
presentation

Scope Management

There are 6 Scope Management Processes :1. Plan scope Management

2. Collect Requirements
3. Define Scope
4. Create WBS (Work Breakdown Structure)
5. Validate Scope
6. Control scope

15

Success Factors

Customer Satisfaction is very important and it can only be achieved if we

have done following correctly :1.

Put up a plan in place how we will collect and finalize scope

2.

What are the stakeholders who should provide requirements

3.

Filter requirements as per project charter and finalize scope

4.

Write down and get agreement on what is included and excluded

5.

Create WBS for resource , cost estimation and assignment

6.

Keep monitoring scope for variance control .. If we do it correctly

cost and time would be controlled as well and project deliverables will
be done in time

7.

Lastly take deliverables to customer and validate it for acceptance

16

Syed Rizvi PMP , ITIL V3 , 6 Sigma

Critical to scope control

The most important factor is identifying ALL stakeholders in requirement

collection phaseany legitimate stakeholder identified later in the
project will cause variance and might generate requirements that could fail
the project before startbe aware while you identify stakeholders

Telecom/IT Projects are generally elaborative in nature and requires more

flexibility, agility and waterfall methodology as per competitive market
demands

Using organized PMI methodology maximizes the chances of successful

project delivery and of course Telecom / IT projects are no exception
