TOM JENKINS

Biography

For 25 years Tom Jenkins has been all over the world covering
sports events and personalities for numerous newspapers. In his
childhood he was obsessed with sport but soon learnt he loved
photography at school which made him realise his new talent
and also career from a different angle.

His book of sports photography 'In the Moment' was published in

June 2012 during the London Olympics and was showcased in
Kings Place, London and Newcastle.

He was won a number of prestigious photography awards from

Barclays Photographer of the Season to Young Press
Photographer of the Year. His first big break as a photographer
came when The Guardian started to give him more and more
work. Since then he has been busy ever since.

This landscape midshot photograph of Jonny Wilkinson was

taken just after he led England to victory with a drop goal in
the Rugby World Cup 2003. The point of interest in this certain
photo is definitely Wilkinson himself and his infamous number
10 shirt, it instantly draws you to look as the crowd around
him create leading lines towards him almost as though he is a
god like figure. There are no colours within this photo which
dominate each other, there is a huge variety such as white,
blue, greens and yellows. There is a mixture of lighting in this
photograph from low-key to high-key, low-key lighting is one
natural light source e.g. The sun. The high-key lighting is
coming from the fluorescent lights within the stadium. Depth
of field within this photo is very obvious that it is a deep focus
due to the fact there is no certain focus in the picture that the
camera has focused on. The next analysis is mis-en-scene,
the costumes within the photography mainly focus around
Jonny Wilkinson's rugby jersey as this is a major point in the
sporting world as you are known by the number on your back.
The settings the photo is taken in is the stalls in the stadium,
immediately setting the mood as joyous as everyone is
celebrating a victory win. The framing in this photograph is
positioned centrally within the frame which breaks the rule of
thirds. The photograph itself is very bright but the contrast is
high as the whites appear to be very white within the
photograph taken.

The photography taken below shows a

landscape photograph

This photo is a midshot landscape shot of

Oscar Pistorius in May 2011. The point of
interest within this photo is directly his
body as he is in a stance which just
catches the eye, this is where you look
first at the photo. There are a lot of
leading lines in this photograph of
Pistorius especially behind him with the
stadiums triangular lights above, his
movement also creates leading lines with
his arms. In this photograph the
dominate colour over the rest is
definitely the blue sky in the background,
the lighting is low-key as it is coming
from a natural source which is outside.
