ABSTRACT
In many ways, Disabled people are deprived of the pleasure of enjoying a
normal life. Mobile phone is a good technology which is not lacking from
our lives .
From this scenario, this paper addresses the problem that disabled people
face when accessing the new systems and technologies that are available
nowadays.
A gesture recognition tool has been used to control the activating the object
of interest using bluetooth module. For this, an Android app of the algorithm
has been developed which gives an interactive user interface where the
user will tilt the smartphone in the direction of his desired movement and
the degree of tilt decides the speed of robot.
RAJALAKSHMI ENGINEERING COLLEGE-ANNA UNIVERSITY

ABSTRACT
The Application uses smartphone's inbuilt accelerometer,
processor and bluetooth as a processing unit and data
transmitter. By doing so, the user has the flexibility to control the
different home appliances and application.

OBJECTIVE
To addresses the problem that disabled people face
when accessing the new systems and technologies that
are available nowadays.
To control the activating of the object of interest using a
Bluetooth module using gesture recognition tool with
interactive user interface.
To allow the user to robustly interact with the user at
different levels of the control and sensing.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 GENERAL INTRODUCTION

In todays highly competitive scenario, People with disabilities meet
barriers of all Types.. And its a shameful state of affairs there has
arisen a need for old age homes in modern times.
So, for their loss of their routine life, we implement a system which
provides comfort in their four walled world. Its not surprising therefore
that technology in infrastructure is not considered a luxury but rather a
necessity as it helps achieve significant cost reductions.
We believe that owning a mobile phone in your hand is you can solve
many issues .Likewise, this method is implemented by controlling the
different appliances and application using their smartphone.
RAJALAKSHMI ENGINEERING COLLEGE-ANNA UNIVERSITY

GENERAL INTRODUCTION
This can be done by introducing the Application which uses
smartphone's inbuilt accelerometer, processor and Bluetooth as
a processing unit and data transmitter.
In this paper, gesture recognition tool has been used to control
the activating the object of interest using a Bluetooth module.
For this, an Android app of the algorithm has been developed
which gives an interactive user interface where the user will tilt
the smartphone in the direction of his desired movement and
the degree of tilt decides which appliances to be turned on.

Fiorini, Yuichi Tsumaki and Erwin Prassler(2007)
This paper provides a general overview of the area
which should be of interest to those wishing to have
an
introduction
to
home
automation
and
independent living.
Here, every data from the home appliances which is
collected can be centrally processed and managed
in an intelligent manner and subsequently used to
control the home environment to improve the users
living experience[5]

Improvements in Home Automation Strategies for Designing Apparatus for Efficient SmartHome
K. Balasubramanian and A.Cellatogluuses(2008)

A Home Assistant system software installed in the PC

brings the daily activities to the monitor screen as obtained
from the activities programmed in tables of databases.
Saving of electrical energy by this unit is maximized by
automatically changing the angles of the solar panel and
wind mill fixed on the terrace.[9]

A Safety Measure for Control Mode Switching

of Skill-Assist for Effective Automotive
Manufacturing by Suwoong Lee, Susumu Hara,
and Yoji Yamada(2010)
To develop a safety measure that ensures smooth control
mode switching of an intelligent assist device (IAD)SkillAssist for the purpose of effective automotive manufacturing.
Smooth switching, i.e., switching without abrupt
deceleration, from the hands-off control mode to the handson control mode is expected to enhance the productivity of
IADs.

Remote-Controllable Power Outlet System for

Home Power Management by Chia-Hung Lien,
Ying-Wen Bai, and Ming-Bo Lin(2012),
This paper describes the Wireless Power Controlled
Outlet Module (WPCOM) with a scalable mechanism for
home power management.
It is used to switch the power of the sockets ON/OFF and
to measure the power consumption of plugged electric
home appliances.

Automatic User State Recognition for Hand

Gesture Based Low-Cost television Control
System by Shiguo Lian, Wei Hu and Kai
Wang(2015)
This proposes an automatic user state recognition scheme
to recognize the TV user's state and activate the camerabased gesture recognition module only when the user is
trying to control the TV.[14]

Home Automation Oriented Gesture Classification from

Inertial Measurements-Angelo Cenedese, Gian Antonio
Susto, Giuseppe Belgioioso, Giuseppe Ilario Cirillo(2015)

This paper approaches a preprocessing phase based on

principal component analysis to increase the performance
in real-world scenario conditions.
This methodology is tested on two datasets of four gesture
classes (horizontal, vertical, circles, and eight-shaped
movements) and on a further dataset with eight classes.[1]

An Android for Enhancing Social Skills and

Emotion Recognition in People With Autism by
Giovanni Pioggia, Roberta Igliozzi, Marcello Ferro,
Arti Ahluwalia, Filippo Muratori and Danilo De
Rossi(2015)
This paper describes an interactive life-like facial display
(FACE) and a supporting therapeutic protocol that will
enable us to verify if the system can help children with
autism to learn, identify, interpret, and use emotional
information and extend these skills in a socially
appropriate,flexible and adaptive context.[6]

1.3 SUMMARY

RAJALAKSHMI ENGINEERING COLLEGE-ANNA UNIVERSITY

18

SUMMARY
From the above mentioned papers, we have observed that
Technology for the disabled has made numerous advances
over the recent years. People with disabilities still meet
barriers of all types.
The things they have been doing to help disabled people to
be able to stay with the advances that have been going on
in the world is proceeding nicely.
The usage of various small micro controllers and systems
has reduced the scope of development or improvement..
RAJALAKSHMI ENGINEERING COLLEGE-ANNA UNIVERSITY

19

SUMMARY
Therefore our project focuses on developing a
system that is capable of providing complete
control of different applications and home
appliances which can fit in the palm of our hands.
A novel micro controller is required that provides
scope of improvement too .This paper could help
disabled people contribute more in the workplace
and improve their quality of life are surely welcome

1.4 OBJECTIVE

RAJALAKSHMI ENGINEERING COLLEGE-ANNA UNIVERSITY

21

OBJECTIVE
To create a model that can provide complete
control of different applications and home
appliances by use of simple micro controller and
relays
To reduce the stress of caregiver in need such as
disabled people or old age relative in place of
hospital and old age homes.

CHAPTER-2
1 BLOCK DIAGRAM AND WORKIN

23

BLOCK DIAGRAM

RAJALAKSHMI ENGINEERING COLLEGE-ANNA UNIVERSITY

24

WORKING
The working principle is based on the
USART(Universal Synchronous Asynchronous
Receiver Transmitter).
To achieve this ,the baud rate is specified within
the program. In general the bits per second is
transmitted at 9600 bps.

RAJALAKSHMI ENGINEERING COLLEGE-ANNA UNIVERSITY

25

WORKING
Once the data is received, the microcontroller
performs the required actions by switching on and
off the relay circuit. By this way, the electrical
appliances can be controlled.
The data are transmitted when the android
smartphone is tilted. The data are received
through the bluetooth module when the android
smartphone is tilted.

2.2 CONCLUSION

RAJALAKSHMI ENGINEERING COLLEGE-ANNA UNIVERSITY

27

CONCLUSION
Owning a mobile phone in your hand is you can solve
many issues and hold most of information around the
world.
So technologies that could help disabled people
contribute more in the workplace - and improve their
quality of life - are surely welcome.
And if such assistive technology can be used by nondisabled people, too, it can be made more cheaply to the
benefit of all.
