Water pollution

is the contamination of
water bodies

form of environmental
degradation occurs when
pollutants are directly or
indirectly discharged into
water bodies without
adequate treatment to
remove harmful
compounds.

affects the entire

biosphere

Types of Water Pollution

Nutrient

Pollution
Surface Water Pollution
Oxygen Depletion
Ground Water Pollution
Natural Pollution
Suspended Matter

Types of Water Pollution

Oil

Spillage
Chemical Water Pollution
Domestic Sewage
Agricultural Run-off
Industrial Effluents
Thermal Water Pollution

Sources of pollutants
Point

source water pollution

refers to contaminants that
enter a waterway from a
single, identifiable source,
such as a pipe.

Nonpoint

source pollution
refers to diffuse
contamination that does not
originate from a single
discrete source.

Water Pollutants
Sewage
Metals
Lead
Cadmium
Arsenic
Agrochemicals

like DDT
Bacteria, Viruses and Parasites

Detergents, Oil and Gasoline

The state of Philippine water

this rapid development has come at a

price of increased water pollution, 127
freshwater bodies being sampled, 47%
percent were found to have good water
quality. However, 40% of those sampled
were found to have only fair water
quality, while 13% showed poor water
quality.

50 of the 421 rivers in the Philippines are

now considered to be biologically
dead,

4,000 people die due to contaminated

water

Major Sources of Pollution

Inadequately treated domestic wastewater or

sewage (48%)

Agricultural wastewater (37%)

Industrial wastewater (15%)

Non-point sources such as rain and groundwater

run-offs from solid waste or garbage deposits which
is also known as leachate

Which areas of the country

are most affected?

Regions with unsatisfactory ratings for their water

quality criteria include the National Capital Region
(NCR) or Metro Manila, Southern Tagalog Region
(Region IV), Central Luzon (Region III), and Central
Visayas (Region VII)

Ilocos Region (Region I) was found to be one of

the highest contributors to nitrate contamination

Government step in water pollution

The 10 priority rivers with reduced water pollution include

the Meycauayan River, Marilao River and Bocaue River, all
in Regio 3; Calapan River in Region 4B; Anayan River in
Region 5; Iloilo River in Region 6; Luyang River and
Sapangdaku River in Region 7; Balili River in the Cordillera
Administrative Region; and Paranaque River in the
National Capital Region.
